…What does everyone think about fuel additives?...
Two main reasons to use a diesel fuel additive… 1) prevent gelling in colder climate areas and 2) keep fuel fresh for easier starting…
One main reason to use a gasoline fuel additive… 1) used during extra long periods of “non-use” and fuel storage (keeping fresh) chemically helps prevent “varnish-like” reaction with stationary internal components…
All the other reasons stated by a mfr. are for marketing purposes to differentiate their product from the rest… in other words… fluff…
I use a gasoline additive in my boat, generator, and mowers during the long winter idleness, and the same in the snow blower during the summer period. All the 2-cycle equipment has this additive built in the oil…
I have never used any “commercial” diesel additive… never… in our area we have cut the diesel fuel with kerosene in the colder climate periods… @ ~~ .89 to .99 cents for 128 ounces… versus say $3.89 for 12 ounces of additive…
If you have a diesel that sits for long periods of time… just prior to use… pour in a gallon of kerosene in the tank… presto… instant freshening of the fuel… (for you people with an oil furnace... use 5 gallons of kerosene prior to winter startup)
For years, different studies have stated 89-99% of these automotive additives on the market are gimmicks to suck a few extra billion dollars out of consumers pockets… they do absolutely nothing extra for the engine or drivetrain components… except make the person feel good that’s using them… /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
