Attached is a picture of my fuel cap. The tractor has 130 hrs and I've had it 3 months. I buy my fuel in 5 gal containers and store them out of the weather. I fuel up at least once a week.

The cap looks like someone found it in the ground and put it on. I'm thinking I will clean it up and cold galv it. I have only noticed this in the last few weeks. So I can't say for sure it was like that new. Is anybody else's like this.

Be careful when spraying some of these are vented and you could stop it up

Clean that "orange gunk" off for sure but I don't think I would put anything on the cap. It might plug vents, as Rocky says, or the stuff you put on the cap could wash off into the fuel tank and cause problems elsewhere. I would take one of your 5 gal containers, shake it well and pour off a gallon into a clear gallon glass bottle. Let it set a while and see if any water collects on the bottom of the jug. It might be time to buy fuel elsewhere. Check your water separator on the tractor.

The gunk is rust that has eaten the galvanized finish. It had to believe that has happened in 3 months.

I would check your fuel to ensure it is water free - check your water separator to see if any water is there and then look to the dealership to provide a new fuel cap. I would suggest that a lot of this has happened while the tractor sat on the dealers lot. You should also pull the bottom plug on the fuel tank and drain off a pint or so to see if any water is there. I don't think that much corrosion could have happened in the three months you've owned the tractor.

You should always try to keep the tank as full as possible to prevent condensation. I also fill from a 5 gal container but with every fill up of 5 gal container I use some fuel conditioner. In cold weather after running a while the bottom of the cap will have little ice balls and frost on it from condensation. My cap never got like that though (6 years now).
