I posted this in the repair section and didn't get any reply's, so I'm trying it here.
This is on a JD 4310 tractor

I've done the test that is in the service manual for the fuel gage, remove the orange wire and gage goes to empty, touch the orange wire to the black and gage goes to full.

On removing the sender for more testing or replacement, does the screws that hold the sender in the tank just screw into the plastic, or is there a metal ring made into the tank for the sender to mount to?

Also is there a gasket or an O ring that seals the sender to the tank?

Service manual does not go into much detail on this, guess I need to look at a parts manual to see what I'm looking for, anyone know where I can find one online?

Thanks

I replaced the sender unit, what a pain in the A** that was. thing keeps wanting to leak.
I put gasket sealer on the gasket and reinstalled the sender.
Going to let it dry over night and see if it holds.

John deere's website has online parts manuals.

That's why I didn't bother replacing mine, instead I just settled for living with a useless fuel gauge and fill 'er up every 4-5 hours when running high rpm. According to the (late) previous owner's son the fuel gauge was faulty right from the start and the dealership attempted to fix it twice then gave up. This is a widespread issue with JD CUT's.

I have a 4310 and on mine when it shows empty, I can then fit a 5 gal can of fuel in the tank. The tank never gets more than 1/2 empty.

My sender is missing its float. Otherwise, it came out easily. I am wondering
if I should order a new sender....what did yours cost?

I just replaced the sender on a neighbors 5205. Noticed it was leaking and that turned out to be the culprit. I believe it was around $130 and included the gasket. Hardest part of it for me was trying to get the screw lined back up.

That was what was wrong with mine, float was in the rear of the tank, I fished it out with one of those finger grabber things.
Anyway the sender from my JD Dealer was $60.00 plus tax, and that comes with a gasket.
If you change it use gasket sealer and let it dry over night before adding fuel.

$60, I would consider....$130, forget it. Good idea about using sealant,
though it originally had none.

I wonder what happened to my float. I have had the tank out, washed
out, and upside down drying. Nothing rattling around in there!
