Went to do some hoggin', do usual walk around, start tractor, check fuel, 3/4 of a tank, start mowing roadside.

I look at fuel gauge some time later and its showing empty. Now at this point I'm thinking, Wow I couldn't have been out here that long. Shut down tractor, look in the tank, yep, over half a tank in there.

So I've crawled around underneath, over, looked through, I have not taken anything off yet, but I cannot find/see anything disconnected. Actually the fuel electronics seem to be fairly safe where they are run. All other electrical functioning fine.

Could it just be that the in tank gauge went bad.

Any and all ideas welcome.

Thanks

Maurice

With a phillips head screwdriver, take out the two screws holding your instrument cluster and carefully pull it out. Check the multiconnector on the cluster, the wire to see if they are worn, and your fuses.

Also, the sensor wire is on top of the tank and goes down the the operator platfor behind your seat - maybe it got worn.

Finally, fill it up - maybe the float is stuck.

Good luck!

My TC40D did the same thing at almost exactly the same number of hours. All of a sudden the fuel gauge started reading approx. half of what was really in the tank. I pulled the sending unit but didn't see anything wrong with it. I tried adjusting the float arm some but that didn't seem to help much. I haven't gone back and looked at it any more since I always fill the tank after using the tractor.

Take the panel off and check the wires. There's a nice little spot for mice in there...

I'm not sure it is related.. but on my 7610s. after you start you can turn the key back one click and the tractor stays on.. but the gauges don't work.. etc..

Last Sunday, I started my tractor and both the fuel and tach stayed on the lower peg. My tractor has 700+ hours and I figured moisture or something had shorted something out and blown a fuse. I reached down and thumped the instrument panel and both gages instantly jumped to the correct range. I think it was probably a loose connection and may just show up again very soon. I don't think it was the gauges sticking because two gages sticking at the same time would be a real coincidence. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Thanks for all the replies, I'll try pulling the instrument cluster tonight to check for worn or chewed wires and inspect the fuses. If I can't fix it at that point I'll just call the dealer, its still under warranty /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I'll post back when I have an answer, might help the next person that it happens to.

Thanks again, you guys are great!

Jinman....I get an intermittent lack of operation on my tach ( TC35D ). Its comes and goes and will usually work fine on the restart. I haven't been able to get a good fix on any factors that affect it. Seems to be cool and damp mornings after I leave the tractor out all night. Someone had suggested a bad solder joint on the printed circuit board. I've checked and reset the multi-pin connector on the instrument cluster.

It's a nudge, but doesn't affect the real operation of the tractor. I've gotten pretty good at 'hearing' the RPM anyway. Let me know if you stumble onto a fix.

Well, fuses are all ok, and now cleaned-up, checked the connections of the sending unit in the top of the tank and they were fine, so I called the dealer and they are going to check it out. They did say that they have had a few gauges go bad.
So, as soon as they have a diagnosis and fix I'll let you know.

Since we're on the topic....I had to take the tank off of my 1910 to clean a bunch of crud out of the bottom, which I did by putting a little diesel in and just shaking it all around. When I hooked up the two wires going to the take from the guage the guage didn't work and hasn't since. I'm assuming I screwed up the float inside but didn't pay much mind until I ran out of gas the other day. I usually keep a better eye on it but I was in a hurry, trying to get something done quick and got stupid.
I haven't tried to remove the unit thats on top of the tank that the wires run into because I don't know what I'm getting into past that. I've got no reason to believe its the guage or wiring since it was working fine before I took the tank off to clean it.
Any ideas????
