Has anyone had bizarre readings from their 4000 twenty series fuel guage.

If I am 1/2 full or better it seems to function correctly.

When I am below 1/2 it seems sporadic.
One minute it will say almost empty then back to near 1/2..
Jumps around slowly but seems to have no idea how much fuel it has.

It is not a matter of slosh or being on an incline or tilted.
I check it on level ground after sitting for a minute to let it 'catch up'.

I usually run it till it says close to empty for a period of time and I've never put more than 8 gallons in the 14.5 gallon tank.

Wondering if there are any known issues with this tractor series.....

Thanks !

Don't know about the Twenties - but the fuel gauges on the Tens are not a strong point. Probably par for the course, unfortunately.

I have a 4520 with the same problem. I suspect the problem is systemic. BTW, my JD Operator's Manual is incorrect. It lists the engine oil filter as RE519626, whereas the factory installed filter is RE518977. Wonder what an aftermarket equivalent number would be?

I have a 4120 with the same problem. The gas gauge wanders.

I have a 4300 and my fuel gauge never goes above 3/4 even when it is flat out full to the brim. Seems to be a JD problem whatever model you are operating.

I have a new 4310 and haven't noticed any problems with that machine yet but I have a 2003 x595 that started having gas gauge problems this past spring when it was only 6 months old. Seemed like every time I looked at the gauge it read all over the place - even when I had just filled the tank. The dealer told me JD was aware of a problem with the "sending unit" and if a customer complained, they should replace it under warranty which did fix the problem. If Deere is supplied with gauge components from the same manufacturer, I wonder if similar problems sometimes show up on other JD models like a 4720. I would check with your dealer.

TTT- My 4320 does pretty much the same thing, bounces when full around the top half of the scale, goes to zero after a while and stays there. Sometimes I get a lo fuel warning that goes away. It never does indicate full but part of that is filling it down at the station about 1/4 mile away. Too much foam to get completely full.

My 4200 is a bit different. When it is empty, it shows a half tank. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif
