John Deere 4100
I have a 4100 John Deere. I had an issue with the tractor running. I replaced the air filter. I replaced the fuel filter which had to be the problem because it was full of trash/mud like material. I bushed hogged for about an hour and have not started it in about 2 weeks. I went to start the tractor and it would run but I could not throttle up because it would go dead. If I do not throttle up it will run but not at a smooth pace. I am new to working on a tractor and I am at a loss as to what to do next to fix this throttle up issue Any help would be great, thanks Jim

Jim welcome to the forum. It sure sounds like a fuel issue. Trash/mud in the filter sounds strange unless you obtained some contaminated fuel. I would drain the tank and start with new diesel if it were me. Good luck.

I was a newbie to a tractor when I bought this used tractor. I just started using the tractor when I got it for quite a few hours before the fuel issue started. The fuel in the tank is all fresh I had just filled it up prior to the fuel issue. I just took the fuel bowl off and inspected the new filter and bowl all is clear and clean. I did turn the petcock off before taking off the filter. Is there any way that air can get in the system, even with using the petcock. because I have heard that air can cause problems with diesel engines?

It is possible that the previously contaminated fuel still got to the injectors. Filters don't necessarily catch every little thing. You might get lucky and double dose some good fuel treatment into the tank.

Diesel bugs. Get some biocide and fire up the search engine, there's lots of good info on diesel bugs on this site and others. Biocides are most readily available at marinas and truck stops.

Not a bad idea to replace the fuel filter again after running a biocide.

Thanks for the info everyone. Never knew about bacteria/stuff in diesel fuel. I will try the biocide treatment and let ya'll know. Jim

I changed the fuel filter again and took all the fuel lines loose and replaced one that was cracked. The tractor started and is doing well but I will still try the biocide treatment as a backup for further issues, thanks again.

Hello, I'm new to this forum but had the same problem with my JD 855 tractor. What had happened in my case is that the short section of fuel hose (with metal screen filter on one end) had come off the end of the metal portion of fuel line down inside the fuel tank. So I only got good fuel flow when the tank was full to half full. Once it got below the metal portion it wasn't able to flow at full capacity anymore. The fix was to use a metal fuel clamp where the rubber fuel line connects to the metal portion, so it could not come dis-connected again. Poor design as far as I'm concerned. I'm sure several others have had the same problem now or in the future. Good luck.
