What seems to be the best diesel fuel additive to add to fuel for lubrication for the low sulfur fuel in the older style mechanical fuel pumps. Some still stay automatic transmission fluid, two cycle oil and other things.I have been using either Stanadyne or Power service brands. Just some of your thoughts.

I have been using Stanadyne. Once you start using it you will see a remarkable difference in how much better your engine sounds and little or no smoke.

Have a look through this site http://rivrdog.typepad.com/files/copy-of-diesel-fuel-additive-version-3.pdf

It's getting slightly dated by now but much of what they tested is still the same stuff. You can see that some of the stuff some people claim works actually increases wear, like Marvel Mystery Oil for one. I always figured the only "Mystery" about MMO is why anyone would use it in the first place.

Another high quality product that isn't on the list is Texas Refinery Corporation's DXL-LENE XL/10...rates right up at the top and from the test results I have seen would be in between that lists second and third place products.

To start with sulfur is not a lubricant.
I would never use oil or trans fluid in diesel fuel.
I only would use additives especially formulated for diesel fuel.
In my case I use PS in the white bottle 12 months per year.

I just talked to some JD mechanics this week about this very thing. They said the new fuel has been pretty hard on the injection pump seals. The senior tech said he has used regular motor oil in the fuel to soften pump seals, but only if the pump is working normally otherwise. But for a regular fuel additive Stanadyne is hard to beat.

I just got Opti-Lube XPD..

We'll see. I previously used Power Service

Funny, go over the BITOG and post that about MMO..You will be laughed at. MMO worked great on a UCL and a mild cleaner.

I do NOT use PS anymore since it will %%&* up your UOA.

I used to use Stanadyne add since I worked there in the 70's.

Now I use MMO once in a while..No issues in years.

Not true. Sulfur does act as a lubrication agent in diesel fuel. The severe hydrotreating required to reduce fuel sulfur to the new EPA 2006 specification of 15 ppm sulfur maximum caused a further reduction in fuel lubricity beyond that caused by reducing the sulfur content alone.

I also have been using Stanadyne Performance Formula (I use 2oz in the Summer to 4oz in the winter winter per every tank refill - usually about 15 gals.) since the 90s starting with my 89 F250 which my daughter has now. Stanadyne Performance Formula is manufactured by the same people who manufacture fuel injection systems for diesel engines. Even in minus 25 degrees Fahrenheit up at 8,000' in the Rockies I have never had Fuel Gelling Problems where I usually find diesel trucks that filled up with diesel #1 or #2 with no additive stopped on the road. I also use it in my Kubota L39 year around.

This subject has been kicked around for years. For grins see:
Fuel Additives? what is the best? - Page 2 - Diesel Forum - TheDieselStop.com

Best of luck to you,
Jim
