I have a bx 23 can I use home heating fuel in my tractor with no ill effects. I think the manual says to use # 1 or 2 diesel fuel.
A freind of mine said I can use off road diesel or home heating oil in my tactor.
What would happen with not using diesel .

twinsticks,
I have used home heating oil in both my Kubota diesels for 8 years now with no problems whatsoever /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif. The only difference is that home heating oil is tinted red so it can be detected if your trying to use it for over the road vehicles /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif.

Okay so home heating oil is okay how about off road diesel or is that really junk fuel

Off road diesel is not junk fuel. It is, depending on your geographical location, either regular diesel dyed red or high sulpher diesel dyed red or home heating fuel dyed red, or sometimes high cetane diesel dyed red. You have got to ask to see what you actually are geting, but in all cases it is not junk fuel.

Okay so I can use any of the fuels then with no ill effects .
Would it be safe to say that diesel is like regular and priemium gas. One has more octane than the other.

Were I buy my fuel the station has # 1 and off road dyed diesel big diffence in price .
I am just trying to get the most for my money.

Yes.

Diesel does not have an octane rating. It has a cetane rating which is similar but not the same.

Just buy the off road fuel. It is cheaper because there is no road tax applied to its price. Make sure you buy any diesel fuel from a station that regularly refills its tank (ie a medium to high volume station). This will insure the fuel is fresh.

This has all been discussed at length before. Go search on diesel in the oil, fuel, and lubricants forum.

I prefer to use the off road diesel but have to drive 15 meiles each way to get it. If I'm in the pickup and driving by the station, I always get some. Otherwise I buy the on road and pay the difference. $3.15 last Friday for on road. The tractor doesn't know any difference.

Correct me if I am wrong. Most diesel fuel intended for
on-road use is custom blended for cold weather use. I would think even off-road diesel fuel would be blended for the particular season of the year.

However, does home heating oil need an additive to prevent gelling in cold weather? Most home heating oil users in the Northeast have their fuel tanks in the basement which is somewhat warm. People who live in mobile homes around here need to burn kerosene in the winter to prevent fuel gelling as their fuel tanks are outside.

As long as one added the proper anti-gelling additives to home heating oil it should be fine in the winter, would that be right?

OLD SCHOOL WAYS Dealer had me use 50 50 diesal kero mix when i bought my 23 last winter. They even mixed the first batch for me.I m sure the additives for diesal is just as good, but im sticking to their reccomendations, they have been there 75 years, and they have a good reputation with every farmer i know.soon as the temp drops steady below freezing im blending it.If i lived in a warmer climate i would use off road all year long.I am not going to trust they put anti gel additives [winter formula]ill make my own.offroad-kero similar price.I dont buy into the statements that kero doesnt lube like diesal, furnaces have fuel pumps dont they?Tractor by net has got guys burning every thing but the kitchen sink i their rigs, alot worse than kerosene
