fuel smoke

Older diesels will "slobber" when they are cold. Slobbering is passing unburnt fuel out the exhaust in a black slimy mess. Get out and really WORK that tractor for an hour then after an hour of hard work, idle down and throttle up. See if it is better or not.

You may also want to add some fuel additive with "cetane improver". Add enough for 6 points. Higher cetane fuel burns easier. That may help a bit too.

john bud, your advice was right on. I worked it hard for an hour, breaking up garden. put cardboard in front of radiator, got temp up to 195 F, and 95% of smoke dissappeared! still get black, oily residue inside tip of exhaust. too thin to be all oil, too thick to be all fuel . probably mixture of fuel, oil and soot , or "slobber" , if you will. don't you agree? thanks again for advice. don't freeze up there in 'Wi. we are getting 70 degrees here in 'georgia. garden time.

Even that last residue will probably disappear if you continue to work her. There likely is a build up of residue in the exhaust and it will take awhile to burn it out. The solution is to work it like it was intended to be worked. With garden time you should have all the opportunity. Good go.
