I am looking to replace the fuel tank on my 1975 MF 135 with the Perkins diesel. It’s pretty rusty on the inside and clogging the lines and fuel filter. Has anyone done this and found a reliable source? I’m mostly concerned with getting a quality tank that will be a simple swap out.

Thanks.

Do you have the strainer on top of your fuel shot off valve? Often this is missing and everything gets filled with junk.

I can’t tell. Would the strainer be up inside the tank? See photo below.
Thanks

You can not see the filter when installed in the tank. You need to remove the fuel shut off tap from the tank to see. A bucket, funnel and hose will be needed to catch the fuel. Run the fuel down first.
I had a similar crud in tank problem, but was not prepared to dump a good tank.
The fuel shut off tap and the fuel filler opening both have a lip the prevents removal of crud.

I had a problem with a rusty tank in my old Leyland I have used a twenty liter oil container it had a threaded hole for a drum tap which I have used for the outlet and the return pipe is just poked through a hole in the cap.

A nice touch is that it has a clear strip down one side so you can see how much is in it
I works better than it looks

I received my new tank with cap from Cross Creek Tractor yesterday. Made in Turkey. Any tips or tricks on removal and replacement? I wanted to replace all related parts at the same time and may still do so. No rush. New fuel sending units don’t seem to be available and the new shutoff taps contain plastic so I’m a little wary of them.

Thanks for the replies above.

Taken from another forum:

AGCO P/N 1079398M91 SENDING UNIT IS NON ADJUSTING.
P/N 506273M1 IS USED IF THE FUEL TANK IS 6" DEEP SENDING UNIT IS ADJUSTABLE. Measure how deep your fuel tank is Some are 9" deep, some are 6" deep. These are the only two sending units listed for US. 135's.

I have ordered the adjustable for my early production 135 and my fuel gauge works. The only way to get the right part is through a dealer. You can go online to agco parts and order. I use Lang Diesel in Kansas and they drop ship direct from Agco warehouse.

The tap can be ordered from Agco as well. The new tap does NOT have a filter screen. It has a raised lip to prevent junk from getting into the fuel lines.

Replacing the tank is a PITA. I had to remove my battery/air filter support bracket. The tank slides forwards. Need to remove sheet metal. Good luck.
