I have had my 4310 for 6 years now and she's been a good girl. After about a year, I noticed that when I put the fuel tank cap on, it would pop back up and I would have to twist back on just far enough to get it tight. I could sense it was not on all the way. Sure enough I have been having a problem with water getting inside the fuel tank. The drain got clogged and water must have seeped in. I am going to have to remove all the fuel and strain it.

My question for anyone out there, how do I repair it short of pulling the tank out and replacing it? I have already tried a new cap.

Thanks!

Wow, that's a serious problem.

I imagine that the tank is a $500 item. I know first hand that it is
a huge job getting it out.

At least you have a fuel drain. I have yet to see another tractor with
a fuel drain. You can flush the bad fuel without removing the tank.

I've noticed that on my Deere 4300, that one has to be very careful to get the threads lined up just right, so not to cross-thread the fuel cap.

Repair? if the tank female threads are shot, I don't know of a fix.

Not sure what drain got clogged. Was it the well around the top of the tank to collect spilled fuel, and funnel it down the drain hose? Must have to leave your 4310 outside in the weather.

Yes, she lives outside until I get the pole building up. The well around the tank is what got plugged up. The tubing was also very tight through the engine and the tube looked like it was compressed. I took the tube off and am going to route it elsewhere. Maybe I'll try the duct tape to see if the cap will take hold to the tank.

Thanks for the replys..

That fuel overflow drain tube getting pinched in there between the valve
cover and air intake hose very likely helped to cause the failure of my
4300 engine.

On the surface, it looks like a good idea to collect the fueling spills and
route them to the ground. But the real-world consequences of this design
result in a very likely chance of getting water in your fuel. My drain was
clogged with dirt, too. Even if you do not leave your tractor out in the
rain, washing the tractor with a clogged drain hose can do this, too.

I have eliminated the hose in my 4300 rebuild project.

Just be aware that fuel and Duct tape are not good company , the glue will turn to goop as soon as the two meet .

Do you have a picture you can post for those of us that aren't familiar with this model ?

I will try and get a pic tomorrow. As I said, I took the hose off. I don't understand why you would design a "well" to collect fuel and water and then pinch a hose through the maze of equipment in the engine compartment.

Well, I fueled up my 4300 for the first time. My fuel cap does not
have the greatest thread either. And my sender unit float is missing. :(
Tractor is now running.
