I just purchased an experienced 2004 B21. I take delivery into my ManRoom tomorrow where it will stay for the winter. I plan on doing cleanup & minor repairs/maintenance then, in the spring, it will move to its permanent home, our cottage near Parry Sound Ontario.
Once it is all cleaned up, I'd like to put a coat of paint on it & maybe even some new decals. The paint on it now isn't too bad but I would like to spruce it up a bit.
Has anyone done a full paint job using a brush & maybe the odd spray can? I've read some painting threads here but most pertain to minor jobs, touch-ups etc. Has anyone done a full paint job? Can a do-it-yourselfer get a decent finish using a brush or roller for most of the work or am I liable to make it look worse than when I started?

My personal advice - Wait 6 months to paint it - By that time your ambition for this now toy will dry up enough that you willl leave it alone!

2004 is not very old if it was a garage kept tractor.

I did a full paint job on a B7100 I was given. You can see the before and during pics here.

And the after pics here.
Finished tractor pics

I personally don't think it can be done with a brush or roller and have it look any good. You would be better off using rattle cans. The best bet would to be to buy a cheap spray gun and compressor and learn how to do it yourself, the results will still be better than using a brush or roller.

+1 on Brain55's advice.

A 4 CFM or better, El Cheapo air compressor with a $25 spray can/gun and a $2 mask will allow you to paint like a pro! Well, sort of.....

I've painted four vehicles in my driveway with good results. The key is good prep work, masking what you don't want painted, getting 2 part lacquer from a shop with "quick set" catalyst mix and go for it.

I waited for a calm day, sprayed them up and the few bugs that landed before the paint set got plucked from the finish leaving only their sneakers.

It's called a ten foot paint job. From ten feet or better, it looks flawless!

Further to Brain55's effort:

I looked at your before/after photos and although my comments about side yard paint jobs apply, your disassembly, paint and re-construction is a different animal! Nice Job.

I think the OP was looking for a quick fix, for his own stuff and when I saw "roller/brush", I just had to chime in.

A guy down here tried to sell me a Mitsubishi tractor with 200 hours on the Hobbs and "new" paint. Hmmmmm....this had to have been a very low hour per year unit as all the rubber was dry rotted!

The term "Painted Lady" is not a compliment for many reasons. Fresh paint however, on your own junk is like a shot of grease; good for the machine's soul.

I painted a car once paint brush and roller color aluminum stove pipe loved it but i was 19 at the time all my friends laugh at my poor car and pointed finger at me that my friend was 44 years ago so very bad move in my opinion

Capital advice. If you spend all winter painting it, fate will demand you scratch or dent the **** out of it first thing next spring.

Thanks guys. I figured this was more work than what was willing to be done. But thought it was a good example of what could be done, if one was willing to exert the time and effort. It took me just under 4 weeks from start to finish, and was probably 2 solid weeks of work. A B21 has much more to disassemble to do the same type of job, but would not be unreasonable for someone to do over 4 months of winter. I used about a quart and a half of blue and 4 quarts of orange. I would bet you would use 3 quarts of gray and maybe 5-6 quarts of orange. Have fun, let us know what you end up doing, and take pictures.

I took delivery today. Here it is.
I had to remove the canopy to get it into my ManRoom.
The paint on top of the canopy is quite faded. I have a compressor so I think I'll buy some spray painting gear & paint the frame & top to see how I do. Then I'll decide the extent I want to dissassemble & paint the rest.

Wow, that looks like a nice ManRoom.
The tractor looks good too, although I have never seen that style of hood before.

The ManRoom was a project I did a while ago.
I can drive vehicles thru the garage & work in comfort. And I can leave incomplete jobs as they stand until the next time since they are not in the way.

650 SqFt. - enough space for all my tools & supplies
concrete floor with epoxy finish
radiant floor heating
counter with large SS sink
janitor type slop sink
beer fridge
TV
sound system

best room in the house

Where is the tractor that needs painted?? Maybe the bucket but man I would leave the rest alone!!!!!!!

Great looking machine! Congrats!

Nice tractor and nice shop!!

One other thing to add...If you want to make the prep easier, get some high build epoxy primer (used to be called K200) to cover the body work and areas that you grind/wire brush.

Once the work area is in bare metal, cover it in DP90 . Then you can either spray or roll the high build over the work area. this stuff will bury 36 grit sand scratches and wont shrink back. It stinks to high heaven, that's why you might want to roll it on.

Wet sand the area with 220, then 320 then 400 using a flat black guide coat. Feather it out into the existing paint. You'll be amazed at how easy this makes things.

That old red lacquer based spot putty shrinks like no tomorrow and the catylized puttys are harder to work with as far as wet sanding.

K200 and DP90 are PPG products. DP90 can be thinned as a sealer prior to paint, which you must do when using high build or the primer will bleed through.

Then again you could just roll the whole thing orange :D

From the looks of that shop, my guess is that we'll be seeing this tractor on the Pebble beach Concourse next year.

The paint job looks great. It's just getting broken in.
If you need something to do, just do all of the maintainance assuming the previous owner did not do it (right) and give her a real good cleaning. Then go drive her around the neighborhood!

About two months ago I took delivery of my 2002 B21 with 1,300 hours on it from the local Kubota dealer. The first order of action was to replace the fuel filter, hydraulic filters, air filter, engine oil filter and all the fluids. I had the dealer lubricate all the joints as well. While I was at it, I replaced the rubber on all the pedals and I made my own rubber mat which actually came out better than the new ones. I bought a slightly used box/blade from the same dealer and had the dealer install several missing 3 pt hitch parts as the tractor was used with a backhoe for most of its life. I bought the tractor sans backhoe. Over the next month or so, I spent a couple of hours every evening going over it with a wire brush and cleaning rag. I bought two cans of spray paint (Kubota brand bright orange II) at $12 ea. and one quart of brush-on Kubota brand orange paint (II) at $35/qt. I also bought one quart of Kubota gray paint for around $20. While touching up and painting, I went over every inch of the tractor, looking for leaks, broken, missing parts, etc. Luckily, I didn't find any. I dismantled the dashboard completly and cleaned all connections and the inside of the clear plastic area and then cleaned the built up grease on top of the transmission area behind the dash board assembly.

After driving the tractor for only a couple of hours, the water pump started leaking fluid which really wasn't a bad thing since it gave me the opportunity to tear into the engine compartment and clean things up in there. I had to remove the fan and radiator to change the pump and that was pretty easy. With that stuff out of the way, it was easy to clean out the battery compartment which over the years had quite an accumulation of weeds and dirt, some of it in front of the radiator. While there, I replaced the battery with a new Kubota brand, painted the frame and metal in the battery/radiator area and cleaned the battery terminals and holding bracket, then coated them with grease. While I had the radiator out, I cleaned it separately. I was amazed at how much dirt was lodged in between the fins. It took me quite awhile to blow it all out and I was glad I did because no doubt the engine runs quite a bit cooler now.

Engine, cleaned with new waterpump. I replaced the cruddy-looking hose segment you see in the picture.

It took some time, a little bit of money but now I have a tractor I can trust for a good many years.

Someone mentioned the hood. This tractor was designed to use in a construction environment and that is why the hood is sloped down at the front, for better FEL visibility. This sloped area is made of very thick metal to help ward off dents from falling construction debris. That is also the reason there is a four post ROP with cross bracing on the top, to save your skin should a brick fall from the sixth story in your direction.

I love the size and maneuverability of this tractor around the home. My wife is a horticulturist and we have many many flower beds with thousands of varieties of plants. I find myself navigating some pretty tight areas and the tractor, while small, is built like a bull dog. It was worth every penny.

That tractor looks pretty good to me. I would just check it out mechanically and use it. Brian your work is great, by the way.

Thanks everyone for your input.

After further thought I've decided against a complete paint job. It would require a complete disassembly & like several have said, the existing paint is pretty good. The only exception is the canopy which is quite weather beaten & scratched. That will be fairly easy to do. I do have a few bad spots which I can touch up with a brush or can to protect the metal.

Trout, like you I plan on going over all the normal maintenance items this winter: change fluids, filters & generally clean up everything I can get at.
Thanks for your photos - its a great looking machine.

In some old paint threads I kept reading about the "new" vs "old" Kubota paint colour at TSC. How do you know which to buy? Is it by the year the tractor was manufactured? (Mine is a 2004)
