Goodafternoon, everyone!

So, I was recently sent a handful of 7024's from a buddy of mine, and aside from the 1/8" electrodes that have shown up in a few videos, he also sent out a couple of "baseball bat" 3/16" electrodes...

Annnd, I just had to try em' out :)

I cranked up the Precision Tig, and used them on DCEP, DCEN, and A/C, on triple-fillet welds and a groove weld with a backing strip. Man was it awesome!

They're thicker and longer than 1/8" rods, but aside from the amperage increase, and slightly more "awkwardness", they're the same concept. Anyway, I made a video about my adventures, and just thought I'd share it:

Hope y'all enjoy it... Have a nice day, everyone! :)

(Fun fact: Since posting this video on YouTube, someone else offered me a few 1/4" 7018's. I'll make a video about that in the near future)

Thanks for your videos. I have been welding for 30 years as needed to do equipment repair, and your videos are helpful to me.

3/16"? That's not big. Get some 1/4" and you can weld about 3' with one rod. Jet rod isn't normally used for groove welds. It's a high production rod for less critical stuff. I burned a lot of it building large oilfield tanks but flux-core has almost wiped out the 7024 market. The tank shops I worked in would buy it by the pallet. Slag should curl up and fall off by itself.

I remember one time when building those nuclear waste tanks. They had a lifting ring at the top of the tank. 4" x 8" stock rolled to the radius of the 8'-dia tank. They required a 1 7/8" fillet weld top and bottom of this lifting ring. Most everything in the shop was welded with dual shield, but a few of these tanks we had to use 7018. We ran 3/16" 7018. Don't know about you guys, but I really had to pay attention to the puddle to be able to carry that much iron over head!

Shield, one of my jobs in the past we used to run 5/16 manganese rods for mega build up on some parts. You wanna talk about a smokeout! Yowza! I dont miss those days!
