I was driving along and suddenly I heard the start motor engage for a fraction of a second, then the whole tractor quit. Fuse number 5 (10 amp) was blown. Previously I’ve had my glow plugs come on briefly at odd times, and now the starter. (I don’t use the key with the rubber cover on it.)

My guess is that the ignition switch is bad, and it’s closing the glow plug circuit and starter circuit when it’s not supposed to. I’m sure the key is in the correct (run) position. Has anyone else had these problems? Can anyone tell my how to replace the ignition switch?

After reading some other posts it looks like most NH models have this same problem. If you keep blowing fuses the ignition switch may be the cause. Does anyone have the part numbers for the parts I need? Can I get them online somewhere?

I can't help you with part #'s but that should be easy for your dealer to find. The electrical diagrams in the back of the owners manual are just basic schematics.

As far as replacing the switch, the kick panels have two bolts under the hood and two bolts shared in the middle. Pretty easy to remove (ok, I was in there for a cruise control issue), just be careful with the wiring harnesses on the left one. Once the panel is off, the modular plugs come out easy with a little lift from a screwdriver on the front. Good luck.

FWIW - the new ignition switch, part number FNH 86405634, cost me $45.29 at my dealer. Hopefully it's a new and improved model. CNH seems to be very proud of them, based on the price anyway.

I'm well past my warranty. I guess it didn't break soon enough.

Steve,
I know your ignition switch repair was a while back but I was wondering how it's working for you? I had the stealership replace mine under warranty along with the cowl that was cracked at every available mounting boss back in December of 05- you'd think someone at NH would use some engineering knowledge when designing these things. Anyway, I am just in the process of replacing my ignition switch again because of fuse problems but this time, since it's my nickel, with a suitable grade.
