Yanmar FX22D
I bought a Yanmar 3 years ago, other than a couple hydraulic lines and battery problems nothing bad to say about it. Until the power steering problems. I actually think it was going bad when I received it, knowing nothing of Japanese tractors and what to expect. But the steering felt funny from the start. Now it's basically non existing. I use the rear brakes to maneuver around the acre and only use it an hour or so a month right now. What I need is some thing on the power steering, diagram and some pics would be nice. All the systems I have reviewed are pretty much the same, generic. I don't know it this is a aftermarket or original steering system. Short of starting to disassembling the engine compartment and tracing the line I hope to find more info. I only bought the operator manual (Murray Publishing) and that of course has just minimum info.
So my questions: Does the system use fluid from a separate reservoir or via the transmission? Is there a functional manual for purchase for this model?
Know what this is?

I'll take a guess at it... from the looks of the pic..It's original ( from the factory) with it's own hyd oil tank... Someone my come along and prove me wrong, but that is the way it looks in the pic.

I don't think that is an original system. The reservoir is in the correct location but that is the wrong tank. and wrong lines. My computer has a virus and I can barely type this. PM me and I will get back to you sat when i'm at work.

Do you have a pic of original or any diagrams showing this model w/PS? Thanks for the comment; one for original and one against.

The FX22 did not have an external cylinder like that. Only the bigger (FX26 and up) models used an external cylinder. Diagram from FX22 parts book-

Thanks for that info. First I need to look at the model on the tractor again it's been 3 years since I looked. Then order manuals

yes Double check the model, but at any rate that is not an original system

PS Fluid, anything special about the fluid? Same as auto PS fluid or same Hydraulic fluid used for the rest of the tractor?

Couldn't find anything to designate the tractor as a FX22D except the big letters on the side panel "FX22D". If this isn't original PS then it uses the original Pump? Still need to know what type fluid and how to measure the level in the reservoir when adding?

I'm sorry but from the two pictures you show I don't see how to check the level. It appears to be a closed system, if so you could use auto p.s. fluid. or atf .
Do you have a picture of the whole side of the tractor?

Yeah, I don't see how to check either, thus my quandary. How to fill, check and what to put in. Here's a couple more pics.

I see two fittings on the top of the tank. One likely is the return hydraulic hose.

Are you sure the fitting nearer the radiator isn't where you fill the reservoir?

getting a little odder... can you take a better picture of the pump? that does look original. but the tank is not. and the air filter access is on the opposite side. I had two fx22's that had power steering and that tank is not original, neither is the cylinder. if I had to guess I would fill that tank 3/4 full.

No I didn't say that. I believe it is where you fill the reservoir and where I plan to do just that when I can verify what type of fluid to use. I removed that cap and it has an obstruction ( fluid can pass) at the top of the tank. No gauge to measure with in that entry though.

Don't make such a big deal of it
OEM or not, Follow the hoses from Reservoir to pump to steering control to cylinder. Something is not working, and you need to know what.

If that is the reservoir you have pictured, Fill it with hydraulic fluid. Leave the cap off and run the tractor to see if the steering is restored.

If it is, You were low on fluid, and you should pull some of the fluid out of the full reservoir (about 3/4 full as mentioned would satisfy me) 1/4 poly tubing and a suction gun if needed.

If the steering is no better, your troubles are elsewhere.

There are no oil based systems on a tractor that can be hurt by using hydraulic (UTTO) fluid to check things out

Sounds like a plan. Thanks for the effort. I'll let you know what happens. It may be a few days to many irons in the fire right now. Cheers

A couple nights ago I tried to put hydraulic fluid in the P/S tank. As I indicated previously the fill (looks like a fill) but the fluid took 2 hours for the amount in the fill tube cavity to go down to the tank. Fluid is to dense. I don't see any other entry point, so I'll try P/S fluid soon as I can purchase some. The holes in the fill tube are like, pin size, seems unusual.

maybe some kind of strainer... Have you tried to remove it ?

Finally corrected my PS problem. The PS is using the same pump as the front end loader. There is no way to see the level of the fluid or measure it. Not sure when enough is enough. so I filled it until everything was working properly, at least to my knowledge. I did find that to get fluid into the reservoir the engine needs to be running. then the fill was quick.
Thanks to all that provided information.
