fx235 ring gear

how do i access my ring gear and pinion to inspect for broken teeth? i removed the left side axle housing and im in the process of removing the right side but it seems like the diff lock gear is keeping it from pulling apart. do i need to remove the top section, where the hydro lift is?

I have no literature or knowledge of your model but do know a little on the older ym series. Access can be gained on them by removing the pto assembly (in one piece). Also access can be gained by removing the lift assembly. Here is a thread showing both removed on a ym series. well i have gained access to my ring gear. i removed left and right axle housings and the lift , as i suspected my ring gear is missing 5 teeth right next to each other, but my pinion looks fine. if i can find just the ring gear should i just change it or should i get the set and change them both to match?

Again, no knowledge of your fx235 but I will give you this quote out of a ym226 repair manual. I expect it would apply to yours also but you can determine that.

"If differential ring gear is replaced, differential drive shaft must also be replaced since they are a matched set."
