I have a yanmar FX32D that I have had for 4-5 yrs now. At the time I bought it, I changed all the fluids in it. The tranny/hydraulic fluid was red coming from the importer and at the time I researched it and found I could use dexron ATF for it (at least I remember finding it on the internet somewhere). I am now not able to find any indication that this practice is ok. I routinely change the hydro filter and check the oil level and color. The tractor runs and drives absolutely perfectly and I could not be happier with the way it performs. My question is should I get this out and replace with Universal tractor hydraulic oil? If so will it be ok to drain as much ATF out and then refill with tractor oil even though I will not have it all out of the loader cylinders etc?

Again I am having no issues with the tractor, I have been researching tranny oils for a backhoe and that got me thinking about this.

one more thing is it is a power shift transmission with 3 gear ranges and 4 F and 2 R speeds per gear range if that makes a difference

I have read somewhere there is a reason they use ATF in Japan. Now I can't remember what it was all about. My FX42d came with red ATF, I change mine out to JD303, that was about 2 years ago and have not had any problem. Terry

Tractor Ernie says he uses ATF in his. They do have a clutch pack somewhat like a auto trans in a vehicle. If you use HYD fluid be sure it meets JD 303 specs

Yes, I run ATF in all the power shift Yanmars.

When its 17 degrees outside the 3 pt & loader work great , not only that, but ATF has a detergent in it to keep everything clean and fight slime.
Slime can be found clogging your internal hyd filter screen when you use regular tractor fluid, but never with ATF.

ATF also holds up to heat better. Automatic trannys can not tolerate any contamination of the fluid or they slip, thats why they put the detergent in it.

We change all the hydraulic fluid on the Yanmars here, and I have yet to see a dirty, slimy internal filter screen that had ATF in the machine.

We have used Mercon Dextron since 1996.:D

Works for us !

Ernie,

When it was below 0 this winter I did have problems with the 3 pt and getting the tractor to move and am considering moving to ATF. I checked quickly yesterday and about all that I can find here easily is the Dextron 3. Is that what you are using? Can you educate me regarding the different ATF fluids. I remember that we had a Hyster compactor once that used Ford ATF in the hyd. and another machine that required Gm fluid. But all that was 30+ years ago. Since then I have not had to deal with ATF and would like to know the current situation.

Mike, we use Mercon Dextron I really don't know about the others.

That's what a Japanese tractor dealer from Japan told us back in the 90s.

I have never had any 3 point lift problems when using ATF.

Others may not use it here in the states, but it works great for us and millions of Japanese tractor owners too:D
