Hey Everyone

Now that cold weather has hit here in NC my glow plugs don't seem to be working. It will not fire up when it turns over and when I out it to the glow plug location on the key switch the glow plug light does not light up on the dash. I did get it to blink one time.

Just wondering if anyone else has run into the same thing before. Any help is appreciated.

Should be a fuse someplace.I'd start by looking for that.I dont think they all burnt out at the same time.
Start by looking for a fuse.It also could be one of those meltable copper "links" too.Volkswagon used to do that on their diesels. But i'll bet its just a regular fuse, probably a pretty heavy one.If you have the owners manual it'll probably tell you where it is.
My second idea would be a bad connection or maybe your switch contacts are going bad.If you have a circuit tester,or a buddy who has one and knows how to use it,you could pinpoint the problem in a couple of minutes..........good luck, let us know how you make out.

On the G1900, the glowplugs work directly off the ignition switch. When the switch is in the preheat position, 12V at terminal 30 is routed directly to terminal 19 out of the switch to the glowplugs. The light on the dash is controlled by the Combination Box and should light for 5 seconds and extinguish, but that light is not necessary for the glowplugs to be working. About half the time, my glowplug light on my G1800 does not come on, but the glowplugs work fine.

To make sure you are getting power out of the ignition switch to the glowplugs, I'd put a voltmeter or test light on the wire going to the glowplugs and ground. Put the switch into the preheat position and see if you get 12 Volts or something near that value. If you get low voltage, it could indicate that your ignition switch has dirty contacts and needs replacement. You might also have a shorted glowplug, but that would most likely cause your fusible link to blow down by the starter and keep the engine from cranking over when you went to the start position of the switch. If the fusible link blows, all electrical functions will not work including lights.

I had the same problem on my G1800S...
I first replaced the ignition switch, but still got no juice at the glow plugs.

A new combination box fixed the issue.

(side note- the parts guys said that they had almost never sold a combination box- they are not a common fail point, apparently)

Branchchipper, I don't want to get into an argument, but current to the glowplugs is not routed through the combination box nor does the combo box control that power. It DOES control the light on the dash, but my maintenance manual schematic for the G1800 and G1900 clearly shows power from the battery going directly to the ignition switch pin #30 with only a fusible link in between. From pin #30, power exits pin #19 when the switch is held in the preheat position and goes directly to the glowplugs in parallel. There is no way for the combo box to stop power going to the glowplugs. I'm thinking that your combo box fixed the light on your dash and the ignition switch fixed the glowplugs even though you could not tell it by the light on the dash until the combo box was replaced.

I have a 1200 Ford that I have owned since 1983 and have replaced the glow plugs twice. I do not think they are fused. Try your test light to ground on the battery to test for power,if it light circut is working. Now for a neat trick, hook the test light to the positive side of the battery and touch the top of the glow plug. If it lights the glow plug is good, if not the plugs are bad. I had no luck with the Ford replacement plugs only lasting a year. Try Walts Tractor Parts in MO, half the price and have been in there 4 years now. Here is a beltdriven generator I just finished and will power with my 1200.
