With the amount of grass I mow with my Steiner, I have considered something like this, or a Swisher pull behind mower. Anything to reduce the amount of time spent in mowing the wide open spaces of my MIL's yard across the street. I could even go with a hydraulic deck since I have aux couplings, but I doubt there is enough flow to handle much of a hydraulic motor.

SkunkWerX - Not bad, It follows the contours quite nicely. Now if all the height of cut is equal, I see it doing a good job. I am willing to bet he got all those mowers free at the landfill. I'm afraid my arm would fall off starting all those buggers though.

I bet it would be a bugger starting all those darn things too

But I have actually rigged up a push mower behind a ride on mower before but it was on a string and we lowered it down a stupidly steep slope and then pulled it back up again to mow it.

Maybe not as silly as it looks.

Rotary gang mowers are now the rage for quality cut of parks and golf course rough (compared to large rigid decks that cannot follow contours as well). Of course, they are usually hydraulic-driven by a large machine and slung from lifting arms.

In terms of fuel usage, the difference between 5 x 5 hp and 1 x 25 hp engine is not going to be that much. But once you get into the larger engines, you might be talking water-cooled, and then fuel usage is going to go down quite a bit compared to an air-cooled engine.

Rule of thumb would be 3 HP (at the blade!) per foot of cutting width, thus a 5 HP engine on a 21" mower, or 15 to 18 HP for a 60" to 72" deck.
