I have one very old garage door opener (sears) and one newer (80's chamberlain). Between the two doors I have one working remote. The openers work fine, but I could really use a remote that would open both.

I bought a universal garage door remote (one click or something like that) and it doesn't work with either. Is there some type of remote/base setup that I can use that can get this too work?

Thanks for the help

You can purchase a new receiver with remotes at Sears or almost any place the sells the openers. The technology has changed quite a bit over the years and just buying new electronics is the easiest route.

And yes a Sears receiver will work with a (put the name of your operator here) and/or vice versa.

Sears and other retailers sell a remote called a "Clicker" that will work with both brands if programmed right. The only issue might be is the age of the Sears opener. That one may not work, being on a different frequency range than what the Clicker will recognize.

Check on ebay - there are tons of garage remotes there.

I had a really old Sears opener on my last house. The remote was banged up and finally quit. Sears wanted almost as much for a remote for that old unit as for a whole new opener, and the new third party replacements wouldn't work with the old Sears opener. So, I took the old one apart and worked on it, replacing the broken switch with a new button, cleaning up the corroded solder points, and got it working. Then I sold the house!!! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was unable to get a remote that would work with a 20-year-old opener I had in my last house. Quite a PITA, actually, as the independent installer I called for help refused to take back the two remotes they sent that didn't work (I only ordered one). Had to dispute it on my charge card to get my money back, even after sending the remotes back to them, certified.

Moral of the story: Don't mail-order remotes for old openers no matter how positive they sound when they tell you it WILL work. By the time you have a guy come out and look at it, you might as well get a new opener and be done with it. Safer too, with the new rolling codes.

You may find that most of the new ones are rolling code designs. So they may not work with very old designs.
The ebay route or swapping the transmitter and reciever as others have suggested is probably the easiest route.
If you swap them out for a new one, you will also have a more secure newer design for about 1 hrs work.
