Is it okay to use the Briggs and Straton gas additive in these engines or any engine not made by Briggs & Straton?

Bought the gas thinking I'd get the mower but it hasn't come in and is debateable now due to postings here. Don't want the heat to spoil the gas.

I'd put in the car.......Get more later...

If you dont have a gas burner, we've had good luck with Stabil brand fuel treatment, though any would do..

Bluestar, how long have you had the gas? If it's been longer than a month or so I agree with HGM and would put it in the car. The recommended method for fuel stabilizer is to add it shortly (within a couple of days) after you get it from the pump. After that the stabilizer will lose it's effectiveness.

I use Stabil as well, have used it for several years now without any problems. It's suppose to keep the gas "fresh" for up to a year. However, I cycle all of it out every six months. I keep about 30 gallons around for the generator in case of snow, ice & hurricanes.

Here's a link for the Stabil fuel treatment.

I have used SeaFoam and Stabil right after I buy gas. The SeaFoam will work like Stabil, But it also cleans too. I have worked in auto parts and small eng. parts sales for over 15 years. ALL the mechanics swer by SeaFoam. (and so do I )

BG44K also works well for cleaning out carbon. Agree that Stabil is the ticket for preservation only.

Gas bought 5 gallons (lot to mow) last Weds. Car not gas hog & won't hold it. Past not great luck with Wally World fuel additive would gum/tarnish over winter. Thanks for link to Stabil, will give it a try after I run out of the Briggs (which won't be long). Haven't heard of SeaFoam, but will read up on it too. Plan was to get the mower in a few days and have it all used up, no word on the mower though. Guess it's too late for the additive too. DAV with UC paying immensely health wise on all of this and really appreciates all of the help found here.

bluestar,

Don't worry too much about the gasoline if it is in a totally sealed container. Once you put it in the mower, however, it begins evaporating from the fuel bowl. As it does the float lowers and allows more into the fuel bowl.

In this way only part of the gas evaporates from the fuel bowl leaving behind the varnish. That's why you use stabil or something for storage over the winter while the engine is not being run for extended periods.

If your gas container cannot be sealed up, then use stabil in the gas can also IF it is going to be kept for an extended period.

As mentioned earlier, most gas additives do nothing but make your wallet thinner, but you do need something to get the fuel through extended periods of more than a few months and stabil is a good choice.

Also, I don't know if Stephenville is far enough away from the DFW Metromess that they do not have reformulated gas. In the DFW area reformulated gas is required to be sold there. Reformulated gas has LOTS of additives already in it. With reformulated gas you really don't need to add anything.

I live to the East of the metromess in Lamar County and we do not have reformulated gas. I try to fill my car or truck up when I am in the metroplex so that the additives will keep my fuel systems clean without buying aftermarket additives.

As a veteran myself, I know what DAV means but I don't know what UC stands for.

Take care of all the pets and we'll talk later,
Doc

Gas is in Wally World 5 gallon plastic container. When you mean sealed good are you talking about a metal container? Haven't seen any of those in a long time. Been a long time since I mowed the whole place but if I recall right about 5 gallons will do it.
I'll be going in to test out the GT 2050 tomorrow, hold up has been front bumper which I can put on myself. A guy that mows out here thinks it will work okay if he finishes shredding first (knocked down the sunflowers but still have about 12" high stick type weeds) and I keep it knocked down after that.
When I know I'll use the gas up fast I never add fuel additive, but when I know it will set for a while I do since tis easier than messing with fuel bowls in this heat.
Stephenville is about an hour drive from Fort Worth (100 miles or so), so probably no reformulated gas. Found out never to use HEB gas in a chain saw, thus only use brand name gas in mowers.
Thanks for the tips folks.
