Have any of you received a note like this? I came home yesterday and found a form in my door that the gas company wanted to come into my house to check my appliances to see if I had a faulty meter. Since the meter is on the outside of the house and if they think the meter is faulty, why do they need access to my house to check it, they can just change it.
My guess is that because we have a woodstove in the family room and I use far less gas than the average customer they think I have bypassed the meter.

Toad,
I'd call the gas company and see if this is legit. Sometimes, as in online phishing scams, people want to come in and "case" your home, for a future burglary or something...perpertrating as "gas co. employee's" to get in. They want to look for exits, entrances, alarm systems, items that are quick to snatch etc.

Be wary until you have full proof it's actually the gas company. And, if it is, you don't HAVE to let anyone in your home! It's your call.

Also, if you "bypassed" the meter, you'd have to do that upstream of the meter anyhow...which is on the outside of the house...so, they would be able to tell anyhow, without coming in...Right?

Be WARY,
Podunk.

That could very well be the reason. Years ago I had heating system using the fireplace and heated water. The power co. was estimating our usuage at that time and it was way over estimated. They wondered why my use was so low and I told them about my system. They didn't ask to see it but they do check into things like that.

A similar story along these same lines. Summer 2005 Mom & Dad had a new Heat Pump & Furnace installed to replaced a 35+ year gas furnace and 2 window AC units. The salesman (for lack of a better term) said be warned, the gas company is going to be beating your door down saying you are stealing gas. We all chuckled thinking it was a "sales pitch." Didn't think anymore about it. Mom kept paying the bills as they came, but said that doesn't seem like it is saving them any money because now they had higher electric bills (HP) and also high gas bills. Winter came and along about March '06 they received a letter saying their meter must be defective and they need to check it because they aren't using very much gas. They come out and check it and Mom tells them about the changes. So they finally read the meter instead of guestimating it. I think she finally had to pay a gas bill in January where she had paid so much in advance. She is starting to see the savings now of the HP & new furnace.

Might let the local authorities in on this. They could possibly catch someone who is pulling this kind of stunt. Notify your gas co. also, then you will know if it is legit.

I didn't realize so many gas companies rely on guessing what a persons usage was to bill them. The last house that I had sent us a note that asked us for our meter reading. We filled it out and they billed us on our usage. If we didn't fill it out, they woud guess for us and charge us acordingly. The only time they did that, it was way high. Lesson learned.

I applied for a job in California to be a meter technician. I passed all there tests, but decided to move to Texas instead. The job would have required pulling gas meters that had questionable readings. From what I understood in that area, it was normal to just pull a meter and test it. The idea of gaining access to a persons house just doesn't sound right.

Last year in the fall I had a guy come out who said he was with the County Tax Office. He tresspassed onto my land, but had a sign on the door of his car that said tax office, and he had a clipboard. He said who he was, but didn't have a business card or any ID. He told me he needed access to the inside of the house to properly value the home for tax purposes. The house is much nicer on the inside then the outside, but he didn't seem right to me. Older, pudgy guy who wasn't a physical threat, but he didn't see legit to me either. I told him I didn't want him in my home and if he needed to asses the house, then he could do it from the outside. He declined and told me that my tax rate would go way up because he couldn't get a real estimate and would have to go high to be sure the county got it's money. This annoyed me, so I asked him to leave.

When my tax bill arrived, it was the same as the year before. I paid it and nothing has changed. The lady in charge of the tax office was on the local radio show and was asked about procedures for taxing new homes. She said that they never enter property that is posted "No Tresspassing" and base there appraisal on the square footage and exterior finish of the home. They have no need to enter a house because the exterior of the home will reflect teh overall home. Nice fancy brick on expensive homes, old wooden siding on poor homes.

Either my home didn't add any value to my land and increase my taxes, or he wasn't legit and trying to see what the inside of the house looked like for something unlawful. It makes me wonder.

Don't let them in unless they have some right to enter and you are sure they are legit. If they are legit, it won't matter if they come in today, or next week when you've checked them out.

Was there a contact number on the note or was it just a post it note? Did the note had a letter head on it at all?

My guess its a scam.

In my area, the tax appraisal is done on the square footage of the house and comparables for the area. They may have looked at the house before it was complated or at the plans in the permit office. They have never been to the house since we moved in. We have a gate across our road about 900 feet from our driveway. Then its another 4-500 feet to the house. The house can't be seen from the gate at all.

We have power no gas/propane. When we designed the house we looked into how the power company would read the meter. They had a special service where the meter could be read remotely if there was a phone connection near the meter base. It cost ME and extra $5-10 per month to make it cheaper for them to read the meter. So they got to drive up our road. :D The power company has a lock on the gate for access. About a year ago we got a letter saying they would replace or meter with a digital meter that allows them to read the meter a good distance from the house. I don't even think they get to the gate anymore.

Later,
Dan

Thanks for the ideas. The card is a door hanger type with the gas company logo on it. The box checked is other, on the back written by hand is "Need access to your appliances to check for a defective meter". The employee signature line is blank and the phone number to call is written in by hand. I think I'll wait to hear from them. If it's important they'll call to set up something. No way I'm going to call a handwritten number.

If your gas usage has decreased significantly from your historic average it is not uncommon for the gas company to change the meter. The reason they need access to the house is to relight any standing pilot appliances and to make sure all the electronic pilot appliances are purged and function properly. I have had my meter changed a couple of time over the last 30 years and each time I got a card on the door requesting I call dispatch to set up an appointment.

Personally, I would not wait to hear from them. Nor would I call a handwritten phone number. But on your bills, there are phone numbers you know for sure are theirs, and I'd call one to inquire.
