It happened to me awhile ago. When I refilled it it worked fine. I've heard of others with the same problem too.

I DIDN"T. The dang thing left me way out in the field and I had to walk back. After I went out and put a little in and brought it back and filled it it has worked fine. Before though it said I had a quarter tank left when in fact I was empty.
The meter on my 4300 stays a long time at 1/4 to 1/2 then drops like a rock to the red in 20 minutes of mowing. There is still about two gallons in the tank but the drop to red can sure get your attention. I think I will have the dealer replace the tank unit.
I have a 4400 and the fuel gauge stuck frequently. I looked into the tank and found that the float is on a rather long arm and apparently was getting stuck on something. Took a long screw driver and tried to bend it away from the sides a little and haven't had a problem since.
