I have an old fuel pump from a car.. Can I use it to transfer gas from a 5 gal can on the ground up to the tank on the tractor. I takes a 3/8" line, runs on 12 volts.

I have used an electric fuel pump to transfer diesel many times , but would be leary of using with gasoline. These pumps are normally submerged in the gasoline in the tank thus eliminating the oxygen factor. If this is an add on or auxilary pump, you still have the wire connections to make and you may be thinking of alligator clips. THIS COULD BE VERY DANGEROUS!!!! One spark could be the end of your endeavor, and your tractor.
BE SAFE! Use a hand pump.
My 2cents worth:D

It will be very slow and could be dangerous.

This is much quicker and safer.
I can empty a 5 gallon can in 30 seconds with it.

Hey LB, I missed 10,000. Congrats!

Please tell me you don't use that battery charger next to gasoline fumes.

1*I have no volume of post goal .
If they didn't tally record or display the number of post that would be fine with me.
2*That's not gas.

I forgot to mention this is a fuel pump that you add to boost a car/trucks intake of fuel. I understand about being careful with gas, but I'm going to have the pump at least 2 feet away from the gas can and the hose going into the can will be sealed with the vent hole at the opposite side. The only exposed connection will be the ones I use to connect to the tractor battery.

I do this all the time at work if we need to take out a fuel tank and it's full:(.. We use a battery jump pack that has an on/off switch. Hook up the ground and B+, insert hose in fuel tank deep enough to remove fuel, put other hose in a drum and turn the battery jump pack on. Then we wait what seems like an eternity.

The pump is a NAPA fuel pump that's made to be mounted in the vehicle. The only time it's dangerous is when someone forgets to turn off the jump pack before hooking up the wires. Sparks and gas fumes are scary mixtures.

I know a liquid transfer pump can do that. This liquid transfer pump pumps 5-6 quarts of liquid per minute. It's battery operated so no wires are needed. Simply insert the pump into the item you want drained and the tube where you'd like the liquid to go and the transfer pump takes care of the rest. Pump measures 24 inches long overall (can be put into liquids about 13 inches deep) and the tube measures 24 inches long.

Gasoline is a tricky thing. Static electricity is everywhere, and what sets off gasoline fires all the time. I don't know at what point this happens, but with it being so common and dangerous, I'd be very hesitant to try anything that wasn't designed specifically for the use with gasoline and a specific container. Plastic containers are also very bad for static electricity. Even if you are prepared to take that gamble with your own safety, are you willing to do this with anybody else who might use it or be near you while you are using it? Wife? kids?

Northern Tool, Tractor Supply and most of the automotive stores sell various types of gasoline transfer units with the tank and pump designed specifically for gasoline. This is the only thing that I'd ever use. Fire and third degree burns scare me real bad, so it's not something that I'd ever take a chance with.
