I'm planning on purchasing a tractor to do various work on 20 acre property in the mountains I purchased, to include grading of sections ,gravel road, log hauling and splitting, etc.I'd love to get a diesel, for the torque etc.,but this ground is fairly steep in places, with moderate inclines everywhere.Somewhere I read that unlike a gas motor that uses a oilpump for the motor lubrication, a diesel motor uses a "splash"method and one hills the oil can run away from the splash of the crankshaft and starve the motor of oil. Or do I have the gas/diesel methods reversed?Any thoughts or experiences with this concern would be greatly appreciated!

I thought all engines used the splash method for lubrication the piston rings and oil pump to inject oil into bearings, lifters etc. I have never heard of a diesel have issue with working on slopes. As long as you dont turn it over, it should lubricate. They mow the dam area at Lake Degray which is probably more slope than I would want to traverse personally and the diesel tractors have no problem. I have heard of lawnmowers burning up from mowing on a sloped ditch bank. Most small engines like that dont hold a lot of oil and if you run them even a short time on a steep slope it starve the oil system and the engine will seize up. Most diesels have a large capacity oil reservoir compared to gasoline and would likely be better suited to working a slope than most engines. Look at the video under the safety forum for the idiot running a back hoe on a more than 45degree tilt.

if it's got an oil filter.. it has an oil pump.

if no oil filter it may be like a lawnmower engine and all splash lube.

;)

To the OP.. if you buy a diesel in any kind of real tractor.. it's gonna have an oil pump just like the old gas tractors did.. etc.

I would imagine many tractors had baffles and possibly dual pick-up points as well.

My tractor has two oil drain plugs, a few inches apart. Without taking the oil pan off to satisfy my curiosity (or you'rs for that matter), there is no reason for two drain plugs in basically the same location...unless there is a baffle between the two halves of the pan. Many cars have "dual sumps", dual oil pick-up points and more than one oil drain plug...such as in foxbody Mustangs. Tractors are designed to work on slopes and weird angles at low rpm's, without provisions for such conditions oil starvation could occur. Either more oil is needed or baffles would solve the problem. Too much oil creates different problems, so a baffle or baffles are the best cheap solution. A thin piece of metal welded to the inside of a pan ain't rocket science...imagine that. Have I taken my pan off to look...no. Would all tractors have baffles, probably not.

I'm trying to think of the 'many', in the how many fords for instance have dual pickups.. so far I'm drawing a blank. none of mine do.. :) last oil pan on my 55 didn't have any baffles either.. :)

I might re-think 'many' to ' possibly some' ;)

Look at Kubota for instance. Here is one picture I found with dual sumps due to the AWD driveshaft. "Some" would be the "righter" answer vs. "many".:)
