Have you thought about using modular aluminum extrusions? It's kind of erector set type stuff and is used a lot in industry. Bosch is one mfr, Item is another. You can get it in light duty profiles that I've made stands and tables out of. Great stuff, a little pricey but you can get end caps, etc. to make really professional looking stuff that is light and easy to work with.
I dabble in stick welding and our welders at work are pros (MIG,TIG) but only one of them can weld aluminum and make it look real good as well as sturdy. I'm just thinking that your first attempt might not be "show" quality, if you know what I mean. I know mine wouldn't be.
