Gasket Goop - Ford 1500 water pump.

Hey Tractor Experts. Ignorant Noob here.

I have to replace the water pump on my 1982 Ford 1500 4WD. I don't know much but it looks to me like it's the original pump. When I took it off there's no gasket between the back plate and the engine block. There's no evidence of any "gasket goop" either. Maybe there shouldn't be. I just remember all the old guys using that stuff on everything when I was a kid.

I ordered a generic pump assembly (pump, pulley, backplate) and it should be here by the end of the week. It includes a gasket for between the plate and block. I assume I should use it. My question is: should I use any type of goop between the gasket and the plate, and between the gasket and the block?

I suppose I could just put it on and see if there are any leaks. But I'd rather just do it once and do it right.

The silicon goop is usually used in place of gasket material. If there was no gasket between plate and block I would not put anything there.

I remember gasket goop. That was used before real silicon sealer came along. I would use silicon now instead of that old stuff. The problem with it was it was a hard drying substance and was more like epoxy as I remember it.

Make sure there is nothing on it. That sealing goop presses out very thin and sticks on good, sometimes. The heat bakes it on. Wire brush the block good anyway, and use the gasket provided.

if your replacement pump had a back cover, no gasket was needed, if you could see the impeller, there is a paper gasket there (#3)

Perfectly clean gasket surfaces and HiTack. Nothing else.
