GC 2300 hydraulic issue

So the other day when I was mowing the lawn, I had a couple instances where the power steering got hard to turn and it sounded like the MMM was spooling down for a couple of seconds. It happened 3 times in about 10 minutes s, self resolving. Grass was not at all tall, problem not even enough to cut it. I checked the sight glass and it was full verified by using an incline. I don't know when it was changed last, as I purchased used (800 hours showing). The transmission felt pretty hot when I checked it, HST fan is fully operational with no missing blades. It hasn't done it since. Thoughts?

The MMM runs off the motor, so, if it slowed down, it could be the engine.

You could start by changing the fuel filter.

Since you don't know the maintenance history, you should change the transmission oil, and filter. As well as remove, and clean, the pick up screen behind the left wheel. None of which may have any effect on the problem. But, at least you can rule some things out.

I've got the manuals on order, my first order of business is to check those items. It came from a Massey dealer, but no warranty other than everything works as it should. It had the oil, and oil+air filter changed along with new blades.

I have never used the mower deck, not sure how it affects the engine speed. The HST pedal gives max torque when depressed slightly. Pushing it all the way forward can increase speed, but also drastically reduces the torque from the HST. If you're in high range and going up an incline, it is possible to get to the point where the tractor will not move, and the engine starts to bog. This I have experienced.
