Its Spring and with it often comes tractor maintenance needs. In addition to normal maintenance needs are the special first maintenance needs of new tractors and their owners. And certainly one of the frequently mentioned new tractors being acquired is the subcompact products in the Massey lineup - the GC line.

This category of subcompact sales contines to grow for Massey because its at affordable pricing and many urban and rural homeowners are developing lots and acreage to move and build on that can take advantage of the GC subcompacts considerable capabilities.

But there is also another reason for the sales growth . . Agco/Massey has bern flexing its marketing muscle and getting dealers who may have been Kubota or other brand dealers to also start carrying the Massey products. As just one regional example . . I know of 6 Kubota dealers in my area and 4 of those 6 dealers are now actively carrying Massey product - and some of thosebdealersvare small and some arevquite large. So growth is coming not just from sales per dealer but also a change in number of dealers.

And after 50 hours or so of use . . All these new owners come up to their first early maintenence decision . . have the dealer do it or get out the tools yourself. And for many who are not eager for a $450 or $500 bill . . the decision becomes diy or find a friend to diy.

And of course the search for the fluids and filters is all part of the effort. Do you get the items from the dealer or an auto parts store or farm supply or online?

Its pretty easy to find oil filters as most auto supply stores offer some compatible options if you have the original agco numbers its a whole lot easier and Ive listedvthem below. . Fuel filters also aren't so much an issue apparently either.

But when it comes to the Hydro filter . . that's a different story because I've been told by a couple auto stores that AGCO as yet has not released the specifications to the filter industry for the hydro unit.

And while I'm guessing the numbers listed below are likely to apply also to prior GC2300/GC2400/GC2600 models from the past of 2006 forward, these numbers are stated for the GC1700 series from 2013 and forward based on my GC1715 model.

Now I also mention that I am using all genuine AGCO filters because you may find your Massey dealer has a Spring Parts Sale (prices above are not the Spring Sale prices). I found such an opportunity which in my case actually reduced my prices to below compatible prices. Sometimes a squirrel finds a nut lol

As I mentioned, I found no compatible for the hydro filter, and I didn't list a compatible fuel filter because it was 40% higher than the genuine AGCO product. Go fugure howvthat works :)

Having the AGCO part numbers is imperitive as auto supply stores may not have listings for Massey GC product even though they have access to the parts.

In addition I had considered using a synthetic Hydro fluid product from Kubota instead if the normal AGCO PermaTran 821XL . . but for the first time I went the safe route and chose the manufacturer's spec as I didn't know enough of what any issues using the Kubota synthetic might be.


I'll also be using a full synthetic Mobil Diesel Engine Oil as it continues to be an advantage in cold Wisconsin winters and a great value with current rebates.

Based on TBN recommendations when the mid mount mower gear box gets changed at the same time . . I will be using a synthetic gear oil by Valvoline.

I had toyed with the idea of usong a full synthetic gear oil in the front axle . . but again I'll do a little more research 1st. Another motivating factor to use the PermaTran 821XL per manufacturer spec for the front axle also was influenced by the fact a 5 gallon pail takes care of rear and front axle with a little left over rather than have leftover of any amount :)

So what other issues or ideas might others offer. My goal with this thread is to make it easier for others like myself who want to use good chooices of materials on their tractors . . Without spending more than they are comfortable with . . . or those who like to see their fluid conditions directly and don't mind some dirt or grease on their hands in doing it.

I've seen a number of threads talk about some of the needs . . but I thought it might be timely to have more information in one place.

I'm sure that others could add much to this thread that I didn't mention . . Or don't know or other options and justifications to consider.

I'd especially be interested in info on using a synthetic hydro fluid like the kubota product etc.. the benefits or disadvantages compared to the PermaTran 821XL.

Also about choice of greases to use for fel zerks and mid mount mower spindle zerks. Currently I'm using a red lithium high speed grease for all my zerk fittings.

Dont forget the zerks on the shafts for the hydro and brake pedals!


My local dealer is delivering all the neccesary items for the 50 hr service tomorow...since they were already coming with my boxblade and front snow blower. Paid a couple hundred bucks for the 50 hr aervice stuff along with a level indicator kit for the fel. Ill let you know what i get for fluids and filters in terms of brand & part number

You are correct that there are some other zerks I need to hit that I didn't so far . . Especially pedals related. I did to tie shafts for the pto to mmm but I'd also like to get the whole tractor elevated a foot and a half so I could really look the underneath over really well too.

What can you tell me about this fel level indicator kit ?

I'll take a pic of the kit tomorow along with all my new Massey toys.. I am expecing a loop with grommet that is stationary, along with a bracket and rod that move as the bucket tilts. When the cutting edge is level the inside/crotch of the bend in the rod will be resting in the loop/grommet. I have also seen setups where the rod slides through a tube/pipe instead of a loop & grommet. When the rod is flush with the end of the pipe - the cutting edge is level.

Fxdb, your location says sebago. What part of the country is sebago? Why I'm asking is I notice they brought gear oil enough to fill the front axle (4.2 quarts) and I understand that is a good thing. But I asdume you are in an area that doesn't have much cold wrather, as regular gear oil thickens some as temperatures decline unless its synthetic which has better pourability.. I also noticed because they gave you 3 gallons of permatran 821xl which is the right amount for the rear-end. About the only thing I don't see is a fuel filter which may not be required for the 50 hour.

Looks like you are all set for tractor renewal :) will you be examining the fluids for any shinys :)

Zerks are one of those things that seems to gather old grease and bunches of dirt and grit around the area. I'm wondering if there is any type of maintenance to be done to zerks on occasion ?

I know about replacement if one is jammed and no longer allows grease in. But is there any way to get the old grease out in order to purge the lubrication points and then put in fresh grease? Say . . with air pressure? Or can the zerks be "flushed" with some kind of cleaner or fluid under pressure ????
