GC2300 / 2310 won\'t start?

Well, this is the second time for me with the same glitch, so here's what I learned. My GC2300 is a few years old (bought new in '03). This past winter (with a lake effect snow warning in effect) the tractor that had run fine the day before wouldn't start. The solenoid was working (could hear it). JerryG patiently walked me through the wire jumping process to bypass the switches. Nothing doing.

Saturday AM, I called the dealer. I was calmer now; it hadn't snowed that much so I wasn't as panicked as the night before. Listening closely, I could hear a click on each of the safety switches (PTO and hi-lo selector) if I had the key in "on" position and moved the levers. Thus, the switches were OK. I went back and forth on the phone with the dealer on a (very patient man). He suggested I physically feel the starter relay (see attachment) to see if I could feel it clicking when turning the key to the start position. Yup, I could. Nope, it didn't start. We had just about given up when I just reached over and gave the relay a jiggle. Since it's screwed to the frame, it really didn't move, but for grins I tried starting the tractor. IT STARTED! It has started every time since then. Until yesterday...

Being a seasoned professional now, I wasted no time in accosting the starter relay. I figured I knew my way around and would have her running in no time. Nope. I thunk hard then remembered to hold onto the relay to feel for the click. No click. Well another call to my trusty dealer and I felt almost good as new. He overnighted the part to my doorstep and I just knew this was the ticket. I popped the old one off and the new one on. Still nothing! Dang It!

Now things were looking dismal. I called the dealer and we talked our way through the situation. Agreeing that there was probably nothing else to be done here, made arrangements for them to pick it up Monday AM. Dejected, I went back out, cursed a little, gave the new relay a jiggle just because, and the darn thing started! I called the dealer back and now we think the probem is the wiring harness that the relay plugs into.

So, three morals to this long-winded story. 1. Work with a good dealer. Make is important, price is certainly important, but most important is a good dealer. There's a reason vetrans remind newbies that they're entering into a relationship with a dealer. I'm very impressed with mine. 2. This board has some great knowledge and helpful people participating. I really appreciate that. 3. If your GC2300 or 2310 won't start, don't forget the possibility that there's a loose connection at the starter relay.

Have fun..."but let's be careful out there"!

Re: GC2300 / 2310 won\'t start?

I have had to glue a pin in a connector for a car before. That may be what is wrong, but I guess that your dealer will find out in a few days. Good luck in getting it back quickly.

Thanks for the info, let's hope I don't need it!
You are dead on about the importance of a good dealer relationship. v I just had a minor hydraulic part failure that my dealer talked me through on the phone and then mailed the part right out. Nuff said.

Re: GC2300 / 2310 won\'t start?

Just curious............which hydraulic failed?? I had had all 4 FEL cylinders replaced in March on our GC2310.

Re: GC2300 / 2310 won\'t start?

All 4 cylinders?! What did you do?

The part was one of the FEL lift arm hydo lines, probably wasn't even the line. The fitting was leaking a little, probably worked loose, I tightened it and most likely twisted the O-ring which then started leaking a LOT. Called the dealer he sent me a whole new line. Problem solved.

Just normal digging - no abuse. Dealer fixed under warranty.

Another story and solution about why a GC2310 would not start:
I just bought a used GC2310 yesterday and was very disappointed when I went out to start it this morning and it did nothing. Turn the key and nothing. No headlights either, just directionals and flashers. After doing some investigating I got out my multi-meter and started probing around. Came inside and searched the forum to find this thread. Went back outside and did some more testing and jiggling of the start relay. Checked the safety switches and they did not make any noise. No noises from starter relay either. Getting really frustrated now. I just spent a lot of money on a used tractor and didn’t want to think I was ripped off for a lemon. Eventually I decided I would start at the switch and follow the wiring to check for any problems. Looking at the ignition switch I decided it wouldn’t be too difficult to remove so I unplugged it from the wiring harness removed the threaded retainer ring and out she came. Then I peeled the rubber boot of the back of the switch and it was full of corrosion. The hard scaly chunks were just falling out. The entire back surface of the switch was covered in a thick corrosive deposit and all the wire ends were barely still connected. So I cut all the wires and removed all the old wire ends. Then I stripped 1/8 of an inch of insulation off the ends of the wires and re soldered them into the correct locations. Put the switch back in, plugged it into the harness and wouldn’t you know if fired right up. Hasn’t hesitated to start since. I think what is happening is the tractor may have been stored outside and rain is collecting in the rubber boot on the bottom of the ignition switch and causing the corrosion. Eventually it will fail, just a matter of time. Luckily for me, my tractor will always be stored indoors. Hopefully tomorrow I will get more use out of the tractor. Also plan to pack the bottom of the ignition switch with dielectric grease just to be safe.

Hi, thing181. The ignition switch should have a plastic cover that protects the key hole when key is removed. The cover is attached under rim of switch, but could easily be torn from switch. plowking

Thanks for the information plowking.
My tractor does not have any type of cover over the key hole. I will be sure to order a replacement ASAP.
