GC2300 / 2310 won\'t start?
Well, this is the second time for me with the same glitch, so here's what I learned. My GC2300 is a few years old (bought new in '03). This past winter (with a lake effect snow warning in effect) the tractor that had run fine the day before wouldn't start. The solenoid was working (could hear it). JerryG patiently walked me through the wire jumping process to bypass the switches. Nothing doing.
Saturday AM, I called the dealer. I was calmer now; it hadn't snowed that much so I wasn't as panicked as the night before. Listening closely, I could hear a click on each of the safety switches (PTO and hi-lo selector) if I had the key in "on" position and moved the levers. Thus, the switches were OK. I went back and forth on the phone with the dealer on a (very patient man). He suggested I physically feel the starter relay (see attachment) to see if I could feel it clicking when turning the key to the start position. Yup, I could. Nope, it didn't start. We had just about given up when I just reached over and gave the relay a jiggle. Since it's screwed to the frame, it really didn't move, but for grins I tried starting the tractor. IT STARTED! It has started every time since then. Until yesterday...
Being a seasoned professional now, I wasted no time in accosting the starter relay. I figured I knew my way around and would have her running in no time. Nope. I thunk hard then remembered to hold onto the relay to feel for the click. No click. Well another call to my trusty dealer and I felt almost good as new. He overnighted the part to my doorstep and I just knew this was the ticket. I popped the old one off and the new one on. Still nothing! Dang It!
Now things were looking dismal. I called the dealer and we talked our way through the situation. Agreeing that there was probably nothing else to be done here, made arrangements for them to pick it up Monday AM. Dejected, I went back out, cursed a little, gave the new relay a jiggle just because, and the darn thing started! I called the dealer back and now we think the probem is the wiring harness that the relay plugs into.
So, three morals to this long-winded story. 1. Work with a good dealer. Make is important, price is certainly important, but most important is a good dealer. There's a reason vetrans remind newbies that they're entering into a relationship with a dealer. I'm very impressed with mine. 2. This board has some great knowledge and helpful people participating. I really appreciate that. 3. If your GC2300 or 2310 won't start, don't forget the possibility that there's a loose connection at the starter relay.
Have fun..."but let's be careful out there"!
