My 2300 shutdown on me lastnight while mowing. I found that the 10a fuse was blown. Put another fuse in and blew immediatley in the 'on' position. I pulled the ignition switch and cleaned up the contacts and looked for any signs of a wire grounding out, but couldn't find anything. Put another fuse in and doing the same thing, blowing as soon as I turn the key to the 'on' position. Has anyone else experienced this or have any other ideas on troubleshooting? I'm leaning towards a bad switch, but don't want to buy one and have the same thing happen. Thanks for any help on this matter, Matt.

Might also want to look for a pinched wire. Check all wire harness around any moving linkages and where harness passes thru sheetmetal.

Take one of your blown fuses and solder a 12 volt light bulb to it. You can then plug it back in and look for the short. Bulb lit = short present. Bulb out = no short. The bulb acts as something called a ballast and will protect the wiring from damage.

Now start disconnecting stuff. When you disconnect something and the bulb goes out, the short is either at that point or further "down stream."

One candidate for the short would be the fuel cut off solenoid, since it sounds like it dropped when the fuse blew. I can't imagine a 10 amp fuse running too much more than the fuel solenoid, but I don't have any experience with MFs, so that is a bit of a SWAG on my part.

I would check the seat switch too. If one of those wires shorts out it would blow a fuse. Power goes through those wires when the key is on and its a good place for wires to pinch.

I dont think power goes through the seat switch just to turn the key on. If you try to start it it does.

Matt,

I had the same problem you are having shortly after I got my 2310.

Check out this thread.

If you are interested in checking it out for yourself you will have to remove the floor panel to get to the fuel pump. Disconnect the wires, insert new fuse and try to switch the key "on".

Thanks for the replys everyone.

Ray, I would bet your right on the fuel pump. I'll pull it tomorrow and check it out. According to the manual the instrument panel and fuel pump are on that fuse. Sort of strange on why the fuel pump would be shorting out. It would almost have to be that or the ignition switch. I'll post the results.

Mine wasn't shorting out it was locked up causing the circuit to over amp. To unstick it I tapped on it a few times and hooked up the battery charger to it. This got it spinning again. But my dealer still came and installed a new one.

Ok, thanks, I'll try that. I still had my dealer order a new one, should be in tomorrow. Man, $133 for that little thing. Have you had any trouble with the new one?

No. No problems yet. When mine quit pumping it was very cold outside. i suspect that the fuel may have started to gell up causing problems with the pump.
