Greetings, I have about 50 hours on my new toy. I have used the hoe a fair bit and have noticed a fair bit of play in the boom ( side to side ). Seems to have the play on the single ram ( for side to side ) and the main boom ram. I can't remember how much play there was when it was new. Do the pins wear or is it the ram? Hope it is just the pins. Not enough grease ?? With this many hours I am surprised of the wear. Don't imagine warrenty covers that..... I have been using it to remove tree stumps and general digging.

Any thoughts???

Hatter,
If the play is side to side on the pin you have nothing to worry about. They all have some play that way. They don't normally wear in that direction either.

Thanks for the reply, it just seems when i push/pull the boom by hand I can see play in pin/ram, prob around an inch of play total. I presume the unit was greased from factory, and the hoe prob has a total of 8-10 hours on it. Just worried I did some damage by not greasing the fittings on the hoe till now. Which would wear on the hoe, the pins or the ram ?

On the ones that I have worked on the eye of the ram seemed to wear the fastest. Just make sure that you grease the way the manual recommends and they will last a very long time. The one place on a GC hoe that needs to be greased the most is the rams that turn the boom side to side. If they are neglected, they will wear at a fast rate.

So... by using the hoe for 8-10 hours with factory grease, then re-greasing now, the wear should be nothing and it is just factory slop? Can't remember the boom with that much play at new, but maybe it was? Would be better is Massey had dual rams for the side to side in my opinion. Another question if i could... the 2006 models have different stabalizer pads and a pin with 6 holes on each.... what are all the holes for, and how do I use the dirt pad and not the street pad? Thanks

Even without grease, you shouldn't be able to see any wear with no more hours than that.
If there weren’t side play on the pins, there would be binding. There has to be some play there. Personally I would much rather have a little to much than to little.
The holes give you a different angle of attach for the pads to contact the ground. I really don't see the need for all of them. If the pads are like mine, to use the street pads all you have to do is remove the pin and flip the pad over. Sounds like they have changed the GC pads since I looked at them.

Thanks for all your advice, ya the pads are new this year. They are a little bigger than before and have street pads on one side, and the other has fairly large metal "teeth". I sure love this tractor, I am amazed on what it will do, although some jobs require a little patience to get it done.....

That's the way the pads are on my 1400 series except they didn't put the rubber on the street side. They want you to pay extra for that.;)
