Hey All,
Still loving the 2310. Whenever I get stressed out at work, I just go jump on the TLB and dig some holes. :D

I was curious at what rpm's do some of you guys generally operate your backhoes at?

I noticed in the manual, that it reads during the first 50 hours, to operate at "full rpm's" but exactly what is full rpm's?

I noticed that on the tachometer there is a white mark at about 2300rpm and then a small green "zone", then red of course. I normally operate the BH around the 2300 white mark. Is this correct? I didn't find anything in the manual that specifically discusses the marks on the tachometer.

Thanks!

I only operate at full throttle when operating the mid or rear PTO. When doing loader or BH work I am just about 2000 RPM. Works well for me, the book says use 2532 for rear PTO, 2476 for mid PTO.

I use the engine speed that works best for the job. If I am working close to say a house, or a pipe, I may throttle it back to make it more docile. (It is easier to be careful if it is moving more slowly). If I am out in the open or in a hurry, full throttle. Speeds can increase as operator gains experience.

Well said. That is just how it is. If anything is to close or the experience level needs work, slow the RPM down. For the opposite, turn the RPM up.
BTW, I don't think that I welcomed either one of you to TBN when you first posted. Well anyway, Welcome.

Thanks guys!

I'm a relatively experienced operator and I would actually like to run the rpm's a little higher than the 2300 on occasion as I could use the extra "umph" at times in some of the areas that I'm currently digging in. I have a serious root problem. I just didn't want to take a chance of over-revving the engine or causing unnecessary wear on it. If 2500+ is recommended for the PTO, then I'm obviously still in the "safe" zone, which is good. :)

The first fifty hours are considered break in and for the pistons, rings, etc. to seat properly, M/F wants a high enough or max rpm, so you don't lug the engine while it breaks in. There are different opinions on how break in should be done, but go with the manual. plowking

I don't understand why there is a red range on the tach? My 2310 does not have a tach, I cannot imagine that the throttle is set up to be able to over rev the engine, there is no reason I can think of for doing that. I can tell you that I run it at full throttle almost every time I use the tractor. Except when I let it idle to cool down before turning it off.

This is a good topic... I have been wondering about this myself.

I throttle back when I am using the hoe, at full rpm it gets a little jerky. As well, the mid pto runs at 2000 and the rear at 540 would not running the motor at full rpm put the pto's at a higher speed than recommended ? ... maybe not just curious....

With practice the hoe operates very well at full rpm. The GC 2310 is the smoothest compact hoe I have operated, most compacts are jerky at any speed. If you have ever run a Terimite you know what I am talking about.
As far as the PTO speeds most of the time you are putting a load on the engine, operating the PTO device, which is going to drop the RPM's down anyway is it not? I have not used my PTO yet so I do not know how powerful it is.
