As is often the case in cooler (low 40's today) weather, I had trouble starting my GC2400 to move a tree that came down early this morning. I ended up jumping it off another 12v tractor parked beside it and then it seemed to srart and run fine. However, now the tach is jumping all the time, about 2 times/second, and often reads very high. A little over half throttle sometimes pins it over the red area. The motor is running smooth and seems to work fine, but what could have happened to the tach? This is new behavior.

Sounds like whatever was lubing the cable is no longer effective. Relube and see if that fixes, or replace cable.
If it's all electronic tach, something went bang, probably a capacitor.

All these years, and they still haven't solved this issue?

Still glad my GC doesn't have a tach.

18 deg F out this morning and I too had the squeal and tack needle buried in the red.
have not had chance to look, does tach cable drive the hr meter?
debating disconnecting for winter but if it drives meter I wont.

Yes, years ago, we had this problem too. (These days it’s all electrically driven)
Chances are that the dry spot is near one end of the cable or the other.
Unscrew or otherwise disconnect the cable housing and introduce a few drops of light oil into the end of the cable housing. If this solves it, put a thimble full of synthetic grease in there for a more permanent solution.
It’s not to hard withdraw the cable from the housing, to lube the whole length. Usually they only come out one way. Before removing inner cable, note how far out the cable protrudes from the housing, as a reference to where it needs to be when reinstalled fully.
You may have to rotate the cable when you reinstall it so the drive lug or flats can find their home.

I disconnect mine during freezing weather when it acts up. I too am annoyed at Massey when this has been an ongoing problem. It's not the only thing on my machine that I tell others is crap and don't recommend one because of it.

I know nothing about how a Massey tach is driven, but in many diesel truck and heavy equipment applications the tach is driven off the alternator by an elecical pulse. Maybe related your starting issue?

My GC2410 did the same thing-its the lube inside the gear assembly. Some have reported cleaning out the old lube and adding a different lube but I am lazy-Dealer told me the new part fixed that issue so two years ago I bought a new gear assembly and swapped them out-hasnt done the jump or the grind since so I no longer need to disconnect the cable during the winter. I posted the replacement part number last year.

But mine would only do this when it was really cold, like 20f or below. Yours is dong this in the 40 degree temps you said? Could be a different issue///cable is very close to the battery-wonder if its fully connected\tight or if there is a bend in it now.

I retired about 9 years ago. The last several trucks I drove had an electrical tach.
A sensor on the bell-housing counted the teeth on the flywheel (ring gear) as it turned.
The speedometer had a sensor in the right front driver wheels, which looked at an exciter ring inside the brake drum.
