I am also a new owner of a used tractor -2008 model. The issue I am having is I can't seem to tell if I am in 4 wheel drive or not. The lever is very difficult to move and doesn't have a definite "click" when I move it either way. If I move it to what I believe is 2wd, which is up towards the operator, it stays there for a minute and then falls to midpoint and stays there. I can move the lever much past the midpoint. I have never driven a 4wd vehicle so nothing to really compare to.

If the tractor is stuck in 4wd is there an easy fix other than dealer service? Will this ruin anything in the tractor if it is stuck in 4wd?

Use the loader to lift the front end and drive forward or backward and see if the wheels turn. Sounds like the linage is massed up, I have had no problem with mine. I would not want to run it in 4x4 all of the time because it would be hard on it on hard surfaces. :2cents: Ed

I'm wondering how easy it would be to get to the linkage. I will have to try to get underneath it later today and see if I can track it down

Ed, does your shifter move smoothly and easily or is it a stiffer movement for selecting 4wd?

It shifts easy but you can aften feel the gears as it goes into 4x4. Often I need to just hold pull lightly on the leaver as I move the tractor a little for it to pop out of 4x4. Ed

My gc1715 at times is a little catchy moving from 2 wd to 4 wd. What I do is real simple.

1. Pull or push on 2wd/4wd depending on direction going . . And if it resists . . I shift into neutral on the speed control lever and then move the 2wd/4wd lever.

Mine isn't easy to tell when it is in either.. But I learned to trust that it is and it isn't from the way it behaves i.e. more traction and less rear wheel spin. I would bet it is working.. I wish they had an indicator light but they don't. Run it in 2wd as much as you can.

I haven't tried what Axle mentioned I may try that next time.

Thanks everyone for the advice and help. I lifted the front wheels off the ground with the loader and shifted into 4wd. The shifter doesn't go in to 4wd easy but it does engage. Seems as though something isn't 100% right with it but it should work for what I'm doing for now. I may eventually have someone look at it. I'm sure it should engage a lot easier than it does
