Oil is dripping out around the right brake cam shaft. This is the splined shaft (#7 in the image) that sticks out of the axle housing next to the axle. In looking at the service and parts manuals it's likely just a bad o-ring. However, to replace that 10 cent part it looks like I have to remove the transmission from the tractor and disassemble it. Does anyone know a shortcut?

I'm really wishing I had bought that extended warranty...

Also, both brake cam shafts have what seems like a lot of wabble in them. So much so that I can't imagine an o-ring would last. Can anyone reach under their 2400 series and wiggle the shaft and tell me if it moves? Parking brake has to be off.

Thanks!
TD

My GC 2300 had oil leaking around there as well.I did have to remove the rear diff etc: split the case and change to o-ring. Mine actually had a nick/piece of the o-ring missing. Its a time consumming job to stop a oil leak. I can tell you that once you have it apart make sure you have a good quality snap ring pliers that have a locking hold position in them. The snap ring is pretty heavy.

As for the shaft being loose mine has a bit of play but not that much to affect the workings of a o-ring. Mine must have been put together that way as theres noway that you could nick and have a piece of that o-ring cut after the shafts were in place. My tractor was used when I got it and I could see that it must have leaked from new due to all the oily residue etc: The funny part was that it must have been taken in or the previous owner tried to repair the leak by cutting a piece of rubber and sticking it over the shaft and sandwiching it between the case and the actuating lever.Needless to say there fix didn't stop the oil leak. Be interesting to hear how and if you do your repair.Larry

massey driver,

Interesting, I was thinking of trying the shortcut the previous owner of yours did. Sounds like a waste of time.

Today I talked with my dealer and they said there should be no play in the shaft or the seal will wear out. My brother has a GC2300 like yours. I went to look at his today and it has zero play. I think there was some kind of manufacturing mistake on mine. Either the shaft is too small or they bored the axle housing out too big.

I'm trying to get the field service rep out to look at it. i've already had to rebuild the engine (at 115 hours & 1 month out of warranty) due to an engineering defect. I don't want to do the same with the transmission.

BTW, Save your engine. Take the plastic coolant drain off today and toss it in the trash before you catch a small stick on one of the hoses and break it off. Just plug the lines. My dealer had two in their shop with engine damage due to the same problem the day I came in with mine. Apparently it's a common problem but even the new machines have that plastic part out in the open asking to be broken by a branch or something.

How many hours did it take you to replace the o-ring? Is it as much work as pulling and rebuilding the engine?

TD-- Ouch!!

I'll be watching this thread to see how it comes out; I haven't had any problems with that oil leak in my 2310 (that I know of, anyway)... but I'll be checking it!

So did you knock off the drain petcock and overheat your engine? Looks like another thing to look at... thanks for the tip!

irvingj,

That's what happened. Engine overheated and ruined a piston before I realized the coolant was all gone. Apparently it's a common thing. Before I said a word the parts guy saw the broken part and asked me how bad my engine was damaged.

The part is not needed. Just plug the hoses.

Again, ouch; that's tough.

I did go out and check the brake cams on my 2310... so far so good, apparently.....
