Went to start my Gc2410 TLB and it won't start. It cranks and all the lights and gauges work. Was working fine about 3 weeks ago. Any ideas where to start? Took out the small fuel filter and cleaned and blew it out with the air compressor . Tried it again and would not start. Think I heard fuel pump pumping as fuel filter holder filled with fuel. How do I test if it is getting spark? Thanks Ray

your tractor is diesel... no spark plugs... and that's pretty much all I know about diesels.

First of all, some back ground, have you owned this tractor long enough to ever start it in cold weather?

How many hours on it?

Original owner , bought 4/2009 has 160 hrs . Stored indoors non heated garage, never had issues with cold weather start, but it has been cold low 30 in Seattle wa area.

First, I would open the air cleaner and spray some WD-40 into the inlet, (starting fluid will also work of course), and see if it will attempt to fire on that. If it does, it's a fuel issue.

If not, you can easily verify that the glow plus are getting power by using a test light or volt meter between the strip that attaches to them, along the top of the engine, and the negative terminal of the battery. You will of course, need to turn the key to the glow plug position when testing this.

If you spray starting fluid in you will find out if the glow plugs are working the hard way. I wouldn't reccomend that. With 160 hours there should be no need to assume something major failed. If it was running when you put it away it should be safe to assume it will run today as long as you get it fuel & air.

You should replace the fuel fiter when you get a chance, blowing it out isn't good for the element. Is the fuel good quality? Is the air filter in good condition? Are you getting smoke while you're cranking? How long are you holding the glow plugs before you try to start? I would check for power at the glow plugs first, if there's power I would assume for now they're working as that's not a common failure. If you're not getting smoke you have a fuel issue. If there's smoke & the air filter is decent, then we need to check glow plug operation further.

When I try to start it it smokes and smells rich, fuel was good. It was low but did not run out of fuel. Been reading about maybe some air got into the lines.

Spoke with my local massey dealer, also thought might be air in lines, said to loosen fuel intake nut to each cylinder, one at a time, crank until fuel spirts out no air bubbles. Then try and restart. Have not tried yet, will post after. Thanks for all the replies.

Your original post gave the impression you took out the fuel filter after the problem arose? It seemed there was a problem before you pulled out the filter? There is no doubt if there is air in the lines it will present problems.

WD-40, or starting fluid is used as a diagnostic tool in shops all the time. Unless you get stupid with it, there should be no problem.
