Hello all,
I currently have a King Kutter 5' tiller w/ a slip clutch and a rough kutter 5' shear pin. I believe both gear boxes are rated at 40HP
I just purchased a 55HP tractor 49HP PTO, Will I blow up the gear boxes? My goal it to get bigger implements, 6' stuff, but I will do that probably next year.
Will the shear pin and Slip clutch protect the boxes? Thanks all!

My experience along a similar line.
A bought a brand new 72" landpride finishing mower. For some reason the pto shaft was not shipped with it.
The small dealer I bought it from loaned me a pto shaft without a shear bolt.
A few minutes into cutting some 6" tall grass there was a loud bang and I looked back to see pieces of the gear box flailing about on the end of the pto shaft.
Sickening feeling.
Gear boxes will be designed with a safety factor so you have a little room to play with but I would be adjusting the slip clutch until it is almost slipping and use the implement with moderation.
The unit with the shear bolt. Get a non graded bolt and try to use the equipment in a way that you are not breaking the bolt all the time.
In reality it is the engine torque which will be factor to be concerned with. The larger tractor engine will not slow down under conditions where the smaller tractor would and thus you are tempted to make use of the additional power.
Before making the decision, price the gear boxes and then decide how big of a gamble you are making.

Slip clutches & sheer bolts are designed to be the weak spot in the system. They should slip or sheer before any other part of the system. As such, it shouldn't matter how much HP you have, the safety device should protect things in the drivetrain. Whether the ompliment can stand all that traction pulling on things is a different matter.

Just make sure the clutch is properly adjusted or you are using the right sheer bolts & you should be fine.
