Hi. I have a used, John Deere 606, with clutch, and no manual. I'd like to change the gear oil. Problem is smoking when doing heavy cutting. Clutch maybe? Any ideas where I might get an owners manual?
thanks, David

Use a 90wt gear oil should be fine.

Is the clutch or gearcase overy hot? If the clutch is hot it is slipping too much and needs more tension. This assumes you are not over feeding the unit.

Dear Steve,

Thanks! I'm assuming that to tighten you tighten the 2.5 inch bolt on the clutch, the PTO side of the tractor, right? Big bolt. Any idea if you have to buy a new clutch, or you can buy a clutch plate if it needs to be replaced? Does it cost a small fortune? David

I always thought the gear boxes used 00 grease. or roughly 50/50 mix of wheel bearing grease and 90wt gear oil

Mine only get the 00 or cornhead after the seals start seeping.

ETA: well crap. Another dug up thread from the graveyard!
