Oil & Fuel Gear oil levels and where to check

My neighbor has a 1401D. It doesn't have a dipstick, either. His manual shows it takes 3.2 quarts to fill it properly. After changing his fluid, we looked into the fill plug hole, and the fluid was just above the axle shaft. Maybe this will help!

Seeing as that there is very little fluid in there, I had better fill it up! I wonder if there is a leak that will appear... I sure hope not, but I wonder how on earth you would lose that much fluid.

Mine was a little low when I purchased it. It hasn't lost anything significant in 15 hours of use. But, I can see oil "residue" around one of my axle to wheel joints.

Could be that noones looked at the level in a long time on yours?

Well, I guess I should fill it back up above the axel shaft.

Does anyone know where I can get some 85w-90 weight gear oil?

That's a very common weight. You can find it anywhere. Walmart.

Well, I went to Wal-Mart and got a gallon of some 80w-90 gear oil. They didn't have 85w so I got the 80w, the only other thing they had was 85w-140.

And I got another tube of grease for my grease gun so I can keep on greasing my tractor after every couple uses .

Anyway, I will fill it up when I get home, and hopefully I won't find any leaks!

Is there any reason not to fill the axle housing until the shaft is completely submerged? What could be damaged by "overfilling"?
