At this point I absolutely know that I need a tooth bar for my JD 790 FEL bucket. I have an older 790, with the 70 loader and a 60" bucket. I've been looking at all sorts of options including Markhams, the Berlon compact model (about 1/2 the weight of most tooth bars & the manufacturer says they have just about 100% customer satisfaction with them) & several others.

What I really want to know is whether anybody has experience with the Gearmore tooth bar. The apparent advantage is that it fastens on with 4 large set screws, requires no hole drilling, and will fit just about any bucket of approximately the right width. Thus it can presumably be moved from one bucket to another if I decide to trade in for a hydrostatic machine or something. Is that Gearmore too good to be true? Who knows about them?

I have not heard of them. I have a Markham and have been very happy with it.

I bought one on EBAY from a tractor dealer. It looks exactly like a Markham in the photos, and could very well be as he advertises that it is made in USA. It fit perfectly and took me less than 1/2 hour to install by drilling one hole in each side of my loader. I actually installed a smaller bolt than supplied, since I couldnt find a bit of the size needed. It has been on and used heavily for about 6 months and it is still tight and good as the day it was put on. I have actually picked up the rear end of the tractor with one tooth hung under a thorn tree stump and not damaged the bar or the bucket. That could have had something to do with all the FEL frame bolts getting loose though, but that is another story. The is where I got mine and it was about $100 less than anywhere else I checked for that type bar and shipping was free. He still has add on ebay right now.

It's not a gearmore but I have a fairly light toothbar that attaches with set screw type bolts. Easy on easy off. It has held up just fine for a season. No wear or movement whatever at the bolts.

I have a Gearmore tooth bar. It goes on and off quickly, especially when I set up my impact driver with the right size Allen wrench. I mostly use it in combination with my grapple for bucking brush, and the extension of the bucket edge makes it much easier to pick up logs. I have only used it for digging a couple of times when I didn't have the box blade or backhoe on. Mine doesn't have replaceable teeth and the tooth ends are rather blunt, so digging in hard ground is not an option. They would work OK in soft dirt or for ripping roots and runners. The ends are shaped such that a replaceable scarifier tooth end would fit with only minor modification and this would improve digging because these teeth are sharp, but I don't really have a need for this. The whole thing is very sturdy.

I hadn't known of anything but the Gearmore with this design. Do you remember the brand name and maybe where you got it? Gearmore only sells through dealers in the Southwest & I would have to get it shipped quite a distance. Your bar might be a good alternative.
Thanks
Jim

I've found out the answer. The tooth bar in question is made by Northstar Implements of Yakima WA and sold by Gearmore under their own brand name, by Ford Distributing under their Frontline brand name, and perhaps by other distributors under other brand names.
