is this type of baler any good?

Don't know I've been asking the same question about a gehl 1500 tho!

I don't know how good those model are. In their day Gehl made some very good equipment, but that is no more.

If you are looking at used ones to buy, unless you can buy for scrap price gehl anything isn't worth it IMO. Gehl has been out of the ag business for many years now and parts are very hard to come by with some things. A farmer I am friends with had to junk his 3-4 year old forage chopper due to he could not get the parts he needed when it broke. I know others with disk mowers and can not get parts either, their machines are a little older. I believe it was 2006 when they stopped all Ag products to focus on construction only.

My old man has a 1460 TDC (which I'm assuming is the next model) and he is the second owner from new and its hardly missed a beat.
Makes good, well formed bales which are always packed consistent.
The down sides are it won't make silage very well and if the hay is a bit wet or damp it can struggle to pick it up properly. If the hay is slippery, and this does sound silly I know, you will also have a hard time getting the start of the bale to roll. On different occasions in one part of the paddock if a new bale was started there the belts would not grip the hay and it would not spin and you end up with a jam you have unload by hand. This has only happened a handful of times in 10 years though.

Biggest problem is the electrics. The wiring loom is prone to breaking down and he has constant trouble with the bale size sensor. i don't know the setup on the 1450 but if its the same as the 1460 and uses 2 magnets that when they get close one senses the other, the at random times it won't work and if you are not watching, you will over fill the baler and cut out the pickup. Putting string on when this happens is a massive pain.
Also is the PTO shaft is offset as the 1460, you can only realistically turn right while baling due to the load the universals will get from the angle if you turn left. Not a major problem, but something that would be annoying if you rake in rows instead of going around the paddock perimeter.
Apart from that, i like them. Never broken a belt, rarely breaks pickup tynes. Parts have been fine here in Australia, can't comment on elsewhere
