I've just picked this old (1979) Gehl 4500 machine powered by a Ford gas 1.6 40 h.p. engine. The engine is marked on valve cover as E7121/50 YC and 2274E on the bottom of cover. Am I correct in thinking the engine has been replaced? I know Ford's car parts numbering system is the first letter was the decade of production. I know in cars a "C" was 1960's, a "D" was 1970's and an "E" was 1980's... Is this true on skidsteer engines as well making the engine a 1987? I know I'll need many parts as I go thru this old machine and want to get the right parts the first purchase. I ordered one book on it but need the name of a company that sells a book with engine specs such as how much engine oil it holds and hydraulic fluid capacity etc. I've owned an early 2N Ford tractor with the Sherman tranny and FEL and a older Allis Chambers "B" tractor. I just love to fiddle around with these older toys. If I'm not in the right forum section tell me so I can move to the correct one.
