Thanks for all the replies. I am shocked that Deutz would have a rubber timing belt. Shocked and saddened.

I spoke with my mechanic. He did not know the answer but seemed to think most Asian engines were of the interference type. Having said that, he said he has seen inteference engines suffer no damage and non-interference engines with damage. Quite inexplicable!

He also cited some old small Chysler V8s with gear, valve trains, working in the gas fields (I believe, he said) with tens of thousands of hours on them.

Why? Deutz has sold some engines that they rebadged, this could be one of them...

It has and does happen to just about every brand.

It is a Deutz 1011 engine, made by Deutz not a rebadged.
Deutz says: "Unlike the vast majority of industrial engines, the Deutz 1011 and Deutz 2011 series engines use a rubber timing belt to link the crankshaft with the camshaft."

The recommended change interval is 1000 running hours.

Deutz must have hired some of those young, earing-wearing engineers from Manheim. The ones with all the GOOD, NEW ideas.

When I think of Deutz. I think of those very, very simple, slow running air cooled gensets you see on construction sites. Just a tiny trailer with an engine , (some are actually Hatz), BIG fuel tank and a stamford end. They just run and run and run, clattering on! They probably violate every known noise and polluton law in CA.

That's not hard to do. Just serving beans for dinner violates noise and pollution laws in California.

Not surprising. I have a 1997 Jeep with the 5.2L engine (Chrysler 318) with 317,000 miles on it. The engine still purrs like a kitten. I did give it a valve job at 250,000 miles. The mechanic said there was not much cylinder wear, with no ridge to speak of.
