Generac engines

I've been trying (unsuccessfully) to find out who makes the engine for the Generac 20kw whole house unit. It's a OHV v-twin that Generac has branded w/their name. I know at one time they used engines from B&S and maybe still, do but I can't nail that down. Anyone know who or a link that sorts this out?

The gen-set we had at our other home was 8kw and used a B&S Vanguard engine. Parts and service were easy to get because that engine was widely used in other applications.

I think some of them are made by generac like the GT990

They make their own engines.

I would think some chinese supplier,but that's just a guess.

It's a brand new unit. I'd like to find engine manufacturer so when I get filters etc. I have something to cross reference to so I can compare prices. Just the same thing we do here with our tractors. OEM vrs. aftermarket.

It's the same as a Briggs motor because Briggs bought out Generac a few years back .. They liked the motor they designed and had the rights to build it for several years.. If you look up B&S you will find that one of there subsidy is Generac,,

You can buy the filters at Lowes or Home Depot too..

Generac is not afilliated with briggs and stratton power products. Briggs and generac had an agreement a few years back but they are separate companies and have no connection at this time. Most of the parts that were sold through briggs for generac are gone and not available through briggs, They must be obtained through generac afiliated suppliers. Generac dealers order all there wholegood products directed from Generac, as well as parts for all but the portable generators and pressure washers.


As a Generac portable service center generac makes there own engine for the higher end units. I have seen the Loncin engine on several of the consumer grade units, they have used briggs, loncin, and nogano that I am aware of.

Just as I suspected, Generac uses chinese engines in the portable units.

I have an older Generac. The label says Generac by Briggs and Stratton Power Products.
