And don't forget the living billboard at Bendix Woods County Park. Pine trees planted to spell Studebaker. You can picnic under the letter of your choice but from the ground you can't tell that it's a letter at all. Here's the park map...

My company owns what used to be the Studebaker Proving Grounds next to the park. There used to be a boneyard in the middle of the track with old Studebakers but they're gone now. The last Studebaker rally that Mossroad mentioned included a nostalgic trip around the track for the entrants. Pretty special event for sure /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Just for scale, between the lower part of the K and the E to its right is a building that will hold 150 people and that is a 4 lane divided highway to the right of the picture.

BIG SIGN. I read somewhere that at one time, it was the largest living advertisement in the world.

Thanks for posting that photo Dave, I tried quickly to find one but only found the park map. They still list this as the worlds largest advertisement in the Guiness records. The museum downtown has photos of another large billboard that used to be at the Proving Grounds. It was a five times scale profile of an old Studebaker model. Pretty cool looking but they destroyed it when the newer models came out /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Mossroad: Is the restaurant in the old Studebaker mansion still running? Had dinner there one time when visiting the museum - seem to recall it was a nice place. Didn't realize you were from S. Bend - spent some time around there, just down the road from you at Culver Military Academy and was raised (???) around Ft Wayne. JEH.

Grim, yes the Studebaker mansion is still there and open as a restaraunt. It's called "Tippecanoe Place" and it is spectacular. My wife and I had our wedding rehearsal dinner there. Here's a link Tippecanoe Place and a photo...

One other interesting tidbit on Studebaker... They were the only company to successfully transition from horse drawn wagon manufacturing to automobile manufacturing. The musuem includes a number of horse drawn wagons and carriages many of which are more impressive than the cars /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner... was out of town. As Rob notes, it is still there and quit nice. We go to brunch there once or twice a year.

Small world! I've been in/around South Bend my whole life. I like it here in Northern Indiana. I head over through Howe several times a year and get into Ft. Wayne once in a while as well. My wife lived there for a while before we got married, so I spent many a weekend in Ft. Wayne.
