yanmar 1802
I havr an old generator that I think the motor is toast in it. I want to see if its possible to create a drive system for generator part of the assembly. Will the pto drive the system fast enough? I have a yanmar 1802

It is likely a 3600 or 1800 rpm gen unit so you would need a set of pulleys/sprockets or a gearbox to increase the PTO rpm from 540 (or 1000) to get the correct voltage from the genny.

well I do know the pto is a 3 speed. The dealer (even though he was a chronic liar) did say that there is no reason to get into the third gear. He claimed that attachments don't need to travel that fast. I figured it might be a good candidate for just the case. I can try to research what rpm it goes up to. BTW I believe the genie is a 5500w

I cant find my exact model info but it appears it gets up to around 1000rpm in 3rd gear

I would start with researching the generator rpm design requirements or the engine rpm output.

If you are lucky, its an 1800 rpm generator that could be driven directly off the engine via a front pto using a standard electric clutch. You can find these as kits on eBay, either new or used. The JD 930, 932 and 935 etc. front mowers use a 22 hp 3 cyl Yanmar with a front pulley off this electric clutch to run the mower decks and snowblowers, etc.
All you would need to fab is a bracket to hang the generator on, either permanent or temporary, either off to the side or underslung. Otherwise its gears, belts, chains or sell it and get one that works. 3600 rpm might work, too, off the engine with the right transmission (still belt drive).

is it a single or two bearing generator/alternator? if it is motor generator set, then most likely it is a single bearing unit (the engine supported one end, and either was connected via a taper or a flex plate, one may have to build a end plate and install a support bearing, if that is the case and the shaft may not be long enough to be driven,

best bet is to see if it is a flex plate or what the bearing is, ( I would consider a rebuild of the engine),

if it is a two bearing unit supported on both ends, and with a shaft, then one could use pulleys, to make a step up drive and then use a tractor to drive it,

one may be able to salvage a belt drive pulleys off of a older combine, from the cylinder drive, for the large pulleys, may have to find some thing for the driven set,

When you say the "motor is toast" can it be rebuilt? That may be far easier and cheaper than wha you are proposing. Another thing to consider is just buying a new engine. Last month I bought a new engine for my plate compactor, a Honda gx120 for $400. Plenty of small engines between 300 and $1000 that should work for you.

I never see much about the tractor engine governors being able to hold the loads or being sensitive enough. The generators on the ships I worked on had pretty expensive hydraulic governors. Maybe whatever kinds of loads that are put on the tractor generators any speed variance isn't important. bjr

If you ever get it working, please post some pictures. It sounds like a fun project.
