I was looking for a generator cover and came across a "Generator Extended Run Fuel tank". It has a pump and feeds through the generator gas cap. It adds an additional 6 gallon capacity to the generator. So it says. I have a pull start type generator that my wife can't pull start. So if I had the additional tank I could go to work and not worry. Has any one had any experience with these extended run fuel tanks?

id be concerned that

- the pump fails and doesn't run thus the Genny runs dry
or worse
- the sensor fails and the pump doesn't cut off pumping fuel all over a hot Genny

and why just 6 gal? why not drop the same setup in a 30 gal drum?

I am not saying that this will work. Just reading the label right now. The sensor failing and pumping fuel over a hot Genny is a genuine concern. If this setup could fail on a 6 gallon unit why in the world would I want to drop it in to a 30 gallon unit?

if it works on a 6 gallon tank-- why not daisy chain it?
(2) 6 gallon tanks? or a 6 and a 30 gallon...

For the thought of overflowing---
Maybe a add a flow valve and an on/off switch.
If the Genny has a 6 gallon tank, fill the expansion with 4 galllons and have the wife turn the flow valve and switch it on after x hours. where x hours is the time it takes for 3-4 gallons to be used...

Just a thought--- but it better be easy and clean to use right?

If faced with the same delema...

id use 1 of 2 soultions

1) larger gravity feed tank
2) sell existing pull start genny and repace with key start genny

the extended run tank setup was $150 or so... so put that money toward a key start and neither of you would have to pull the rope anymore.

What about a boat tank with a 3 way valve run on boat tank flip valve to internal take tank out of the area fill it (or swap it) and hook it back up and switch back?

Ours has a button you press to start it. It also has a rope start but I've never had to use it. We did have a problem with the oil sensor deal, it had to be disconnected as apparently it kept saying the oil level was low. It starts and runs fine now, I just make sure I check the oil with each fill up.

I would like something like that also but would be afraid of it. I can't remember how long ours will run between fill ups but I usually turn it off after 8 to 9 hours anyway for a few hours. At night I turn it off about 10 or 11 and restart it in the early AM to keep the fridge and freezer cold. We seldom have power outages anymore except when we have hurricanes so that is our primary use. I imagine many of you have them for blizzard times and that sort of thing so need them to run around the clock basically so I can see the need for it.

A 30 gallon drum like this would be nice.
Just set it up stationary as shown here or portable depending on where the gen and the drum would be located in realation to each other.

Why not just put a T in the fuel line near the carb and put another tank level w/the old one? Both tanks would drain at the same rate.

If you do change to an electric start generator I suggest propane. I have mine hooked to my 1000 gal tank and never worry about gas going bad in the tank or carb.
