I'm wanting to convert the generator on my Ford 2000 to an alternator. I'm wondering if there's any special wiring that has to be done in order to accomplish this? Also is there a certain alternator that I have to purchase in order to make it mount without a lot of modifications? And finally, what do I do about the tachometer and hour meter that currently connects to my generator? Any input, suggestions, or ideas will be appreciated.

I've done a few of these conversions (none to a ford) using old delco 10si alternators. You should be able to find a tach drive for that alternator as well, I had my local shop order me one for a used 10si from the wrecker...

Most Delco "one wire" alternators are available with a "Tach" terminal, I don't know how your hour meter is wired to the alternator, but I understand WHY. Unless the generator is charging (engine running) it will not count hours even with the key on. Most alternators have an available B+ output for this as well, or it can be added.

Be careful not to go too large, that is, tractors have VERY limited electrical needs, an alternator that will charge 20A or so is probabally more than enough.

As for connecting the alternator and making it work, nothing could be more simple. You connect the B+ cable to the B+ terminal on the alternator, make sure the case grounds to clean metal on the upper and lower mounting bosses and that is it!

I think the ford has a mechanical tach, not electrical. There is a speedometer type cable running it.

I would NOT use a 1 wire alt, pretty simple to hook in a diode. I would suggest that you travel over to ytmag.com and search the ford forum for alternator conversions. More old iron guys there.
