I have narrowed the field down, and I am left with two (2), maybe three (3) bands of tractors.

Here is my question, normally speaking, how much haggle room is there in a new, say $15k tractor? When you first go look at a tractor and they tell you it priced at $15, 000, how far will they move down from that price?

I have bought several cars in my life but have no experience with buying a new tractor and don't know the normal etiquette.

Thanks

Where I am, the price is just that. You may be able to haggle on implements with the purchase of the tractor.

Your milage may differ though.

I had them throw in some extra's - price - "here it is" no haggling... if that's even a word /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif. I ended up getting some good items though, extra hydraulics, the HD bucket with a bolt on edge, and some other less significant things. My experience does not hold true for other areas of the country - but with NH, Bota and Deere the price was very fixed.

I barely had to beat the dealer with a plastic wiffle ball bat to get him down almost $2000 on a $12,000 tractor last year, and this year I picked up another tractor (for the lovely Mrs_Bob) and the dealer came down over $1000 and threw in an implement I didn't plan on buying on a $10,000 lawn tractor by simply mentioning his competition.

But, while my experience is somewhat different than some others posted above, there seems to be VAST DIFFERENCES in the way dealers price in many areas. What is a great price in one area is a bad price somewhere else.

You can search the web for best possible prices on the tractors you are interested in. There are several large dealers with easy to find web sites. Give them a call and get a quote. See how close your local dealers can come to your "best" price. If nothing else you can get a sense of what kind of deal your local dealer is offering.

In Southeast Texas... the price is negotiable. Just making phone calls to dealers like JD, CC, Kubota they were quick to take at least a few hundred of the price. The more you are spending the more they are able to come off the price. If you have to pay full price for the tractor but they throw in an attachment or two, your still coming out good. I would work them just like your buying a car. Get prices from the competitors, settle on what you think it's worth, tell them what you are willing to pay and if they don't go for it... give them your name and number and tell them when their ready to sell you that tractor call me.

I think the area and the dealer will dictate if you can negotiate. I am not that type of person. I will get a couple of quotes and make my decision based on that. But I tell the sales people up front they have one chance and only one chance. Now I may not take the lowest bid because I feel dealer means a lot but I least I have a gauge on if I am getting a good price or not.

When I do negotiate on larger items there is no reason why a person can't start out at 30% less. Alls the dealer can say is no, he is not going to kick you out of the store especially if your ready and your check book is out on the table. If financing he may want to negotiate as much as check on hand.

Good Luck

A lot has to do with the dealer and the area + the price they quoted in the 1st place. around here they won't come down much.

When I had narrowed down my choices to three tractors I visited as many dealers as I could in our area and told them I was getting ready to buy and asked them for their best price. I used info from TBN, the internet and little bargining and ended up with a very good deal from the local dealer of my choice.

I was just at my dealers today and he mentioned that October is always a slow month so a good deal could be had on inventory. Happy shopping !!
